First post here, so let's turn this backlog into ashes !

Ori and the Blind Forest

14 hour of playtime, 48 of 57 achievements
★★★★★★★★☆☆

This game is outrageously gorgeous...

...and it gets even better in motion.

But what I'll remember most is the ingenuous skill named Bash. It allows Ori to launch himself off an ennemy projectile while launching the projectile in the opposite direction. It may not look like much, but its dual purpose design make it an interesting and attractive tool throughout the whole game.

In my opinion, the game really shines once we unlocked the Charge Jump (boost up into the air) and the Dash (in the air or on the ground) skills, when we can then begin to rush through the levels at full speed.

Not sure if I'll ever try to 100% this game ("Complete whole game without dying" when the levels are filled with insta-kill traps ? Nope), but I'll definitely try to finish it in less than 3 hours.

Here is the speedrun done during the Awesome Games Done Quick 2018 by the way

Welcome! I wish you the best of luck in incinerating your backlog, game by game c: I hope most of them are good ones!

Yes! I loved the feeling of running through levels with Bash and Dash and Charge Jump - it was a masterful feeling of freedom that I miss dearly in other games of this genre I play (not that I even play that many).

Welcome! I hope you enjoy your time here. Your post looks very nice :)

Ori is really beautiful, I agree. I still haven’t finished it though. It’s quite a hard game when you – like me – almost never play platformers. Congratulations to your backlog assassination :)

Kulfy

Thank you.
About my “very nice post” layout, I must confess I totally ripped off the html from Fallen Kal below :D

Welcome kulfy :)

But what I’ll remember most is the ingenuous skill named Bash.

The feeling when you realize that the #$@&%*! that deal a lot of damage with projectiles can be given a taste of their own medicine by reflecting those into them was absolutely great. Justice :3

Welcome! Great first game to start dealing with the backlog. I played it last year, and absolutely enjoyed every minute of it. Haven’t even considered 100%ing it. Every time I see a no deaths run achiv, I’m like nope XD I don’t particularly enjoy speed running either, so I skip those too. My playstyle is on complete opposite side of the spectrum - I enjoy being slow and methodical, and to do and discover everything possible, I also enjoy the visuals as much as possible when applicable. Rushing just diminishes the fun factor for me.

I’m also on the completionist side during the first playthrough (especially when the collectibles are displayed on the map !), but I’d rather change a few things (difficulty / speedrun…) to keep the game interesting on future runs.

Watched the speedrun a bit ago, and was disappointed they didn’t do the tree. Amazing skill otherwise in there though, and I had no idea the dash wasn’t in the vanilla version before watching that run – dash is awesome!

Kulfy

Yeah, particulary loved the escape part with this lovely track

Just watched the speedrun…pretty incredible, hadn’t seen it before. Thanks for sharing it– and your update!

Hello and welcome to the group! Nice to see a link to a Mark Brown video, I discovered his channel and the “Game Maker’s Toolkit” series not that long ago. His style is just top-notch, I’ve learned lots of cool stuff from gaming in general.

P.S. As a non-native english speaker, I’m having fun trying to figure out how to say “outrageously gorgeous” without getting my tongue twisted. :D

Kulfy

Haha, neither am I, will content myself with writing it :D

If you like Game Maker’s Toolkit, you may wish to check Game Score Fanfare. It only focuses on soundtracks, but Mark Brown is definitely his main inspiration.

Thanks for reminding me about that channel! I have seen a couple of those videos but I hadn’t subscribed to it. Another game music focused channel I know is 8-bit Music Theory, I guess you probably already know about it. :)

First of all, welcome to blaeo, I hope you’ll have fun here! :)
I absolutely loved Ori and the Blind Forest, the controls (played with keyboard + mouse) and the platforming are just so tight and responsive it was a delight to go through all the gorgeous landscapes and finding secrets and unlocking abilities, etc. Sooooo good!
