LOG#1

Well, it’s been a week (more or less) since I started on BLAEO and I “announced” how I was going to beat my Steamgifts backlog this month. It went surprisingly well, I’m a bit lazy with all this, but I did my best and beat 3 out of 5 (later 6) steamgifts wins. One wasn’t specially large, but the others were longer (not The Witcher 3 tier, but still…).

So my Steamgifts assasinated list is like this now:

  • Shantae and the Pirate's Curse
    Shantae and the Pirate's Curse

    10 hours playtime

    21 of 44 achievements

  • Sinless
    Sinless

    2 hours playtime

    27 of 31 achievements

  • BattleBlock Theater
    BattleBlock Theater

    9 hours playtime

    14 of 30 achievements

  • Broken Age
    Broken Age

    10 hours playtime

    34 of 45 achievements

I don’t care about achievements, so unless I play them again that’s how they are going to stay, with the exception to this being Battleblock Theater, because I still have levels to play outside the story mode (and the story on coop mode), but I’m going to give the game a breath for now.

I think a (crappy)review of them is in order, in case some of the people who read this might want to give them a try:

  • Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse: (This was beaten last month, but still) I started this game really excited, because I’ve read pretty good things about the saga and I wasn’t dissapointed, I even got more than I expected, It wasn’t too challenging (untill the last part, fuck that part, it was absurb). And, yes, there were a few really boring backtracking parts, but overall I can say that I recommend the game if the genre is to your liking.

  • Sinless: At first is cool, then it gets better, then a little bit silly and then it ends abruptly with a ‘TO BE CONTINUED’ in your face. And no news about the second part… I can’t recommed it, but go for it if you want to know more about a great but unfinished cyberpunk world.

  • Battleblock Theater: Holy fucking shit this game. Is all you could ask to a platformer and more. It has a ton of levels (In the game and in the workshop), lots of humor and a story engaging enough to be enjoyable even if that’s not the game’s focus. And that ending, man, that amazing ending. Really recommended, I assume it’s better playing it with friends, but you can play it withouth them too, and you only lost a few achievements.

  • Broken Age: This game is very special to me because it was my first game won on Steamgifts. The thing is… I won this for my gf (on my Family Sharing), she beated the game and pushed me to finish it too, but I didn’t have the time back then. But now it’s over, I beated the game and I can say that I don’t regret it, the characters are fine, the story is fun, and the puzzles are… most of them a pain because they make no sense, let’s be honest, but that’s more on the last part of the game (that wire puzzle will haunt me in my dreams, I just know it). I didn’t enjoyed it as much as other Tim Schafer’s games, but it wasn’t a waste of my time and I had a great time with it.

Okay, with those finished the backlog now is the following one:

  • Pony Island
    Pony Island

    3 hours playtime

    11 of 20 achievements

  • Oniken
    Oniken

    62 minutes playtime

    5 of 32 achievements

  • Shadowrun: Dragonfall - Director's Cut
    Shadowrun: Dragonfall - Director's Cut

    12 hours playtime

    6 of 39 achievements

  • Ys Origin
    Ys Origin

    1 minute playtime

    0 of 46 achievements

The first one, Pony Island is a game i didn’t won on Steamgifts, but I decided to include it on my February ‘to do’ list, because it’s almost finished anyway. I’m thinking on pausing Shadowrun: Dragonfall for a bit, don’t get me wrong, I’m having a blast with the game, but I think I need a break. Its spot will be covered with YS Origin an RPG from a saga I’ve always wanted to try, but never had the time to do so, I’m very glad I won it. And Oniken… my nemesis, I’m going to defeat you even if it’s the last thing I do!

That’s all from me this week, happy gaming to all of you!

Huge respect to you for playing your won games. You’ve made some great progress too, congratulations :)

noakubrick

Big thanks ^^ Won games are for playing and even more becuse they were gifts (even if my backlog does not show that… yet!)

Forsaken

Once you have some more wins and similar current beaten rate, I strongly suggest applying for Actually Playing Games group, I believe you’d make a great member :) It was created specifically for those who play their won games ^^

noakubrick

Never heard of that group (weird because I’m in the Playing Appreciated one, kinda similar xD) maybe because I’m new and all that, but I’ll follow your advice, it seems like a great group. Maybe I’ll try to apply when I’ve beaten Oniken and either Ys or Shadowrun (or all of them :D). Thanks for letting me know of the group!

Forsaken

Could you please remove my name from your latest update? I don’t feel comfortable with having my name out there like that. Thanks.

I’ll delete this message once you receive it.

noakubrick

Oh, God, I’m so sorry. Removed. How can I compensate you for that mistake?

Forsaken

Oh please, it is not a mistake at all and you don’t have to apologise. You didn’t have bad intentions at all, I just feel weird when I see myself being credited :P My personal preference is anonymity.

noakubrick

Well, at least accept a whitelist. It’s the least I can do ^^. Sorry for making you uncomfortable.

Forsaken

Sorry for being weird and thank you kindly for the whitelist, I hope I’ll be worthy of it :P I whitelisted you too. People playing their won games is an extremely rare phenomenon on SG so I appreciate them when I find one who does for real :) (I’ve seen many examples of SAM being used just to give the “illusion” that they have played the games)

noakubrick

Nah, it’s not weird ^^ Thanks, btw, I hope I’ll be worthy, too. And yeah, I wish it wasn’t so rare, but nope, I’ve even seen people winning the new Resident Evil and not playing it, that hurts. At least here in BLAEO is a little bit more common, I think, but you never know. And using SAM is just wrong, I even fail to see the point of it, but if it works for them…

uguleley

It wasn’t too challenging (untill the last part, fuck that part, it was absurb)

Oh no D: I’m currently playing Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse as well and two maps away from the last chapter, hopefully I can make it through the end.

Good progress, have fun with your next games!

noakubrick

Prepare your body for wickedly calculated jumps and timing (if you aren’t playing with a control I recommend it just for that part). Or maybe it’s just me and my inability to jump correctly haha. Good luck, eitherway!

Belmas

Congrats on your progress!

I’ve just finished Odallus and loved it to bits. How does Oniken compare to it? Was thinking about trying it soon.

noakubrick

Thanks ^^. I’ve just played a few areas of Odallus, but they are completely different games (i think you know this, but it’s woth saying it) Oniken is linear (with hidden levels) and has no map, no shop… I don’t know if you played any ‘Contra’ games on the NES, but Oniken is basically that with less difficulty. The bosses on both games follow the same patters (weak point, weaker point, defeat), but there aren’t that much similarities between them beyond that and the old school scheme of controls. And Oniken has this thing of repeating the same phase over and over to know all the enemy patters that if you do not enjoy, well, don’t play it, really. But I’ll say that if you loved Odallus you will enjoy Oniken (if you can do the repeating thing).

Belmas

Thanks for your reply!

Yes, I think I will definitely try it and probably like it (if it doesn’t frustrate me first). A Ninja Gaiden/Contra game as polished as Odallus sounds great. I just hope it has infinite continues :D

Adelion

I’ve read so many complaints about that last part from Shantae and I have trouble understanding that. After 10-15 minutes I completed the whole dungeon. I had more problems with other parts of the game. Then again I played with just two hearts …..

Also have fun with your Ys and its induced suffering ^^ The games are really great but if your Shantae post is any indication for timing problems then you will love the bosses in that games. I think Origin was my favourite part I played so far. Mainly because I liked Yunica. To bad her role in the overall narrative of all games was just a filler.

noakubrick

Maybe the complain is the difficulty peak, the game for me was a cakewalk until that part (I had more hearts so I could handle a few hits from the stronger enemies, tho). But it’s not like I spend that much time doing it either, more or less your time.

Great, just great :D Altough it’s not much a timing problem as it is a jumping problem (?). Let’s say, Titan Souls and its one hit death; no problem, I know when to dodge and attack, Shantae and Oniken; I fucking die because I calculated the landing in a jump wrong and fell to my death. So, if Ys has that jumping sections, too, yeah, I’m going to have a great time, but well, at least it seems I’m going to start the saga with one of its best games.

escollo

You have some really lucky wins on SG :D

Douglas

Nice work!! And as Lenor said, keep doing this and you can apply to Actually Playing Games :D
Oh man, Battleblock… that’s a nice game to play. I played few times with friends, but never finished it, yet :p hopefully I can play it with a friend - loved it humour and those cutscenes, they are so fun :D
Congrats with your progress! \o/
