A open world action-adventure game.

One of the first games of its kind. It has a great movie-like story, outstanding atmosphere and a great soundtrack. However, it has a lot of laws, mainly gameplay-related. For example, the AI likes to cheat by driving faster than you can and by shooting you as soon as you come within their view, sometimes giving you zero time to avoid taking damage. The cars also accelerate slowly, turn slowly and have difficulty driving up hills, which was actually accurate for the cars in the 30s. The voice-acting is good, but there are moments when it's pretty bad.

This is a good game that I actually wouldn't recommend to just anyone. If you can look past the flawed gameplay and are willing to sacrifice fun for a great story and a realistic experience this will be the game for you. Otherwise, you can always watch the cutscenes online and then jump to Mafia II instead. Also, this game requires some modding work to get it to work well on modern systems.

A interactive thriller FMV.

I don't really have much to say about this one. The movies are well made, the acting is great and so is the story. Too bad that you can't jump into any chapter you want.

Unfinished games:

  • As of writing this post, I finished Unbox and I’ll post a review of it next month.
  • One Finger Death Punch seems fun, but I think I should’ve just skipped this one and played the sequel instead.
  • Great to see Lumines back! I remember playing it a lot on my Java mobile phone around 9 years ago and listening to that sick MIDI of SHININ’. Now I can listen to it in it’s full glory!
  • Mafia II’s gameplay feels much better than the first Mafia. I love how many little details this game has.
  • Mainlining is pretty good, but sometimes I’m confused by the arresting mechanic.
  • I managed to die in To Be or Not To Be before I could even pick my character. Off to a good start!
  • I gave Serial Cleaner a short bit of time. Seems fun enough.

Notes:

Thanks to the Steam’s Summer Sale, I got loaded on some games (and increased my backlog yet again). I’ve started playing some of those games, like Mafia II, Lumines Remastered and To Be Or Not To Be, but I also bought Heat Signature, DLCs for Goat Simulator and The Escapists 2, most of the Serious Sam series and DX-Ball 2 (which I unfortunately refunded - I got bored of it fairly quickly).

Arbiter Libera

How was the care race in Mafia? I remember PC version has no difficulty options which turned Fairplay into a somewhat infamous mission.

kubikill

It was ok. Other racers weren’t too much of an issue, I just kept flipping my car over in the 2nd half of the race. It was frustrating, having to restart the whole race all over again. I could pick a difficulty option before starting the race, though. Maybe because I installed this modpack?

Arbiter Libera

Possibly. That race was a show stopper back in the day.

Such a shame Mafia 2 ends so abruptly. It supposedly underwent development hell with entire chapters getting axed. Then devs went to develop Deliverance: Kingdom Come.

kubikill

Oh, so that’s why Mafia II felt so short to me! I decided to check out TCRF to see what it has to say about unused stuff in Mafia II and now I wonder how would the game look like if the devs had enough time and resources to do everything they planned.

moonie

Hm, never heard of Lumines. Might wishlist that. It is it like Tetris with cool music to go along with it? To Be or Not To Be seems kinda cute too, gonna watch a video of that too see more of how it plays.

And was Unbox fun to you and do you plan on 100% it? You mentioned you’ll be writing a review it next time, but just wanted to ask if it’s fun etc ~ I think I have key from it from Fanatical, and always been curious on how it is.

Nice progress overall 👍🏻

Thanks for checking out my post!

Yeah, Lumines is what you described. Here’s a fun fact: The creator of Lumines was actually one of the producers of Tetris Effect! Both games have cool music and both react to how you play with sound.

To Be or Not To Be is literally a video game adaptation of a choose your own adventure book. It also has a specific sense of humor, you’ll either love it or hate it.

Unbox is pretty fun. I actually got 100% in it! It gets repetitive quite fast, though. Controls lack precision at times… but you play as a box, after all. It’s pretty short too, it took me 9.5 hours to get 100% completion.

Totally missed this last month! I was waiting on your Mafia review, thanks for the detailed explanation of its flaws. I own Mafia II and normally like to play games in order…With your review of the flaws in mind Mafia 1 still sounds okay and ~20 hours of playtime isn’t too much either. Gotta look out for it in the next sale!
