April 2020

I did some spring cleaning and removed a bunch of games from my library. Almost all of them were freebies I've added because I didn't know any better and I had no intention of playing them in the future. Thanks to that, now my 'wont play' pile is much smaller and I don't have to feel bad about having so many games in the red label anymore.

A Mortician's Tale

This plays more like an extended tutorial than an actual game. You are always told what to do, and there's nothing else you can do but follow. The only real challenge in the game is the 'hard' minesweeper mini-game if you're determined to do it without 'cheating'.

I still enjoyed A Mortician's Tale. It pushed me to think on a topic I've never given really serious thought to (death) and there is some interesting information on death and burial practices. It could've been done much better for sure, but as it is, it still has some value in my opinion. I checked some Steam reviews of the game, and I think several people have already pointed out important issues with A Mortician's Tale. So I won't say much on it.

Etherborn

I won this game last month from GMG forums--a user makes GAs practially every month to give some of their Humble Bundle Monthly/Choice keys.

Etherborn was on my wishlist before it was on a Humble Bundle Choice, and I'm really happy that I got to play it. It's a nice puzzle game where 'gravity' doesn't mean much. I really like its art style, and the puzzles are not too hard that it frustrates me into quitting the game, but still require a bit of thought.

There's also a story in it, but to be honest, I didn't pay much attention to the cutscenes or the narration. I didn't enjoy the voice acting so I ignored it for the most part.

Also, for achivement hunters: none of the achievements are missable but to get them all, you need to play the game two times. Once in normal mode, and once in the Etherborn+ mode which unlocks after you complete the game. In the Etherborn+, the orbs you need to collect are in different places, but otherwise it's the same game.

I had fun while playing this. I also took some pretty screenshots.

I really need to go back to his game and complete it, since the last achievement I'm missing is still part of the game and not exactly optional. However, since the game considers itself 'completed', I'm marking it as beaten and I'll go back to it (hopefully) in the future. I was thinking I'll go back to it this month, but I didn't.

It's a fun game. I liked playing it. Some of the snowmen are harder to build than others, and the extra challenge was welcome. There are two ways of building the snowmen--however only one of them gives you a 'butterfly' and if you're achievement hunting, that might be important for you. I don't think I would've bought it from Steam store myself, but I'm glad I got to play it. (Thanks to Humble Bundle and generous people of Reddit, lol).

GRIS

This is such a beautiful game.

After going through my 'unfinished' games list, I decided to go back to GRIS. The game play isn't very hard but the over-all prettiness of the game makes up for it. I personally didn't mind the easy puzzles as they allowed me to enjoy the atmosphere the game has, rather than being frustrated I can't solve it. I also enjoyed the story, especially because it's told through images rather than words. I don't remember any other game where I took this many screenshots. I didn't share all of it, mostly because they're spoilers.

Also if anyone wants to 100% the game, my suggestion would be to first play it completely, and then go for achievement hunting. Which is what I did. Because I feel that hunting for achievements the first time around would take away from the enjoyment. However, obviously everyone is free to do as they wish. The game has a 'extras' feature where it allows you to go back to certain moments in the game after you've completed it, so it's very good for achievement collecting. I had to re-play a part of the game several times because I kept missing something--but I didn't mind since the game is so well-made.

I'm really happy that I purchased GRIS, and I would recommend it for sure.

This is the game of my childhood. I used to play it with my cousins whenever we visited them. As a kid, this was the hardest game ever. Now, visiting it again as an adult, it's partly nostalgic to see how the game holds. It's not as hard as I remember (obviously) and considreably shorter, but still as well made. I'm glad I went back to it and finished it this time. I don't remember going past the elevator level as a kid, so now I got my conclusion as well. It's a good game and I think it hasn't aged at all.

I bought this at 90% off. If I had paid more than that I would've just refunded it, because even with 90% off there's not much content or gameplay in it to justify my purchase. I did the whole thing in an hour. While the story was nice and the game was atmospheric, I'm not sure what the intended audience is here. Really small children?

It's very repetitive and all you do is put some stars in their proper places. Places are indicated, so you don't need to think much on it. Drag and drop. It's not bad but it's not really a full game. It plays more like an extended demo.

This month I've made significant progress in both My Time at Portia and Terraria. Earlier in the month I was thinking I'll continue playing Terraria with my cousins, and we'll be 'done' with it, but they got bored of it faster than I had anticipated. So we'll see what happens of it. I'm also continuing with my AC Odyssey journey, and I'll probably be done with it by the end of next month. (I really wish the game wouldn't end, but I don't have the Season Pass, so that can't be helped it seems.) I'll add my stats of the game later, when I'm done playing it.

Earlier in the month, I got a bunch of games from Reddit GAs because of all the Covid-19 and Humble Choice extra keys. It made me feel like I've aquired a lot of games, which is true for me and not true for a lot of other people, lol. Anyways. I was feeling guilty about it because I already have around 60 games yet to be beaten or played at all. But this month I ended up finishing 6 games, which is the same amount as acquired, so I'm good? haha.

Also I attempted playing Planet Coaster, and it doesn't look like I'm going to enjoy it--this makes me feel double guilty about winning it!

    Bought:

  • Coloring Pixels: Animals Pack
  • Luna
  • Reddit win(s):

  • A Mortician's Tale
  • A Good Snowman Is Hard To Build
  • Planet Coaster
  • Planet Coaster: World's Fair Pack
  • The Turing Test
  • This Is the Police

That’s some good progress! Looks like you’ve finished some great games!

Thanks for the reviews, it was helpful to read your advice on the achievements in GRIS and Etherborn :)

Any games in mind for May?

Jaded

Ok for PAGYWOSG: INSIDE and A Plague Tale Innocence are currently the biggest contenders.

Maaaaybe continue a little of Alien: Isolation (lol)
Some more maybes just having a quick look at my Steam Library: Etherborn, This is the Police, A Short Hike, Last Day of June, Hob, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, GRIS…..
Random Multiplayer games depend on who I’m playing with. I’d like to go back to Deep Rock Galactic. Finish some more Trine…

So many options!
