Higurashi When They Cry Hou - Ch.6 Tsumihoroboshi:
Trying not to write spoilers
This is “officially” the answer arc to chapter 1.
however as the description as to what happens in chapter 1 is not nearly as exciting as the answer arc to chapter 2 and while it would be interesting to re do the whole arc like some of the other answers its not as story friendly. This arc chooses to focus on an entirely different plot/story using something that happens in it to answer the questions raised in Onikakushi-hen. It also answers some questions relating to the overarching plot-line (while bringing up more questions than it answers)
All in all this is one of the stronger arcs and one of my favorites.
also not really a spoiler but- This arc appears to be the first one with a happy ending…until you read one of the tips which reveal the true ending. “The manga has Furude Rika tease the reader that he had his “happy ending but decided to turn the page.”

I’m surprised I liked this as much as I did. I got it for the multiplayer but was challenged to play it in this months POP and went through the main story as well.

Bleed 2:
This game looks better than the first one but falls short to it in nearly everything. I really liked Bleed 1 and Bleed 2 is still a good game but its just a bit less fun the levels are too easy and other than 2 of the bosses I went through most of the game without dying/never had to restart a level and I didn’t care much for the story even though its just an excuse for the action.

Recently I got a few horror top-down/rpgmaker games for my GF to play/me to watch.

Mad Father:

Was really well done. It created a spooky atmosphere had nice art and other than the screams being really annoying it was a fun experience.

Corpse Party:

I’ve had this on my wish-list for years now but its never gone more than 30% on sale so I finally caved and used some humble store credits to make it cheaper…haven’t gotten very far into it (only beat chapter 1) but its real nice so far.

The Crooked Man:

Creepy but the mechanics are slightly annoying/ having to check every single area before you hit the specific spot that makes the story progress.

Other than the rest of the crooked man series are there any other good games in this genre? does anyone recommend anything?

Amitte

By “this genre”, do you mean RPG Maker horror-themed games or just RPG Maker games in general? Either way, there are quite a few good titles here. Some of them made their way to Steam, some remain free. Haven’t played all of them, but I’m aiming to check out a few more myself :)

Blue Ϟ Lightning

my problem is I abhor the turn based combat in stuff like pokemon so I dont just want to state RPG Maker games. But by “this genre” I guess I’m including other story/puzzle based topdown games like LilEat or to the moon even if its not horror.

thank you for the link!

Amitte

Oh yeah, I get what you mean. And you’re welcome :D

The Crooked Man, I have this ony my follow list. But haven’t bought it so far since it apparently takes quite a bit of time to complete them. And there are four games in the series so their might be more time consumed :P

In second note, I liked Mad Father and especially its main theme. But for **’s sake. I didn’t like the ending(s). Not a single one of them. What is it with horror games and their inability to make a simple, feel good, ending. Even Corpse Party had a more “enjoyable” ending. And that game is about a school of massacred children.

As for other “top down” games: Why not give the second game from the Mad Father developer a chance. It is called Misao. It is still bloody and rich on people getting killed. But is has some humourous undertone and a more enjoyable ending.
Other than (if you are able to stretch your definition) you can give Why am I dead at Sea or Future Proof a chance. Both games I personally can’t recommand enough to other people (and yea, I actually linked of my reviews therefore because more information).
You could also take a look at Wait-Extended although it is slower in pace. Some of them are story heavy, others are light story puzzle games. And there is My Big Sister which is a bit more horror again but has a confusing story like the ending(s) solve nothing. Maybe the The Count Lucanor may be interesting for you too.
Last Word also fits your bill a bit. But is has a LOT of turn-based battling. If you are open for some more battling, their might be one or two more suggestions like Nadia was here which I also recommanded.

Kind of messy now, but as I linked between store page and reviews you should find enough information to make a decision. Also for Future Proof I have (a probably working) spare key.

Another memorable horror RPG maker title for me is Ib. Remembered binge-watching a bunch of its playthroughs on Youtube. And it’s free!

Thank you! a friend actually keeps recommending I play it and I started it a year or two ago (a free download)
will see about getting back to it
