This took me waaay longer than I expected! I was always curious about the Gothic series since it's popular among the people from my country. After I saw the trilogy on sale for like $1, I bought it without hesitation. I skipped the first game because I feared it would be too clunky to me and because I heard the second game is better.

So far this is the hardest RPG I've ever played. From the very beginning I've struggled in combat, couldn't even defeat some random flies and midget goblins, I couldn't get into the city because I looked like a hobo, got lost because I was too poor to buy a map and I got my ass kicked by a bunch of bandits because I thought taking them all on alone was a great idea. Things get easier later on but the challenge is present all the time. Combat's pretty fun once you figure it out, however the controls are clunky and designed to be played with the keyboard alone - seems like mouse support was added just as an afterthought. The dragon fights are pretty disappointing though, especially the final boss.

Gameplay aside, the lore and the world are top-notch. The story Nearly every single character has something interesting to say. There are many side quests to do and the have lots of variety. The world is so small and yet it feels so big - there's something in pretty much every single corner - an item, an enemy or just some decor. The graphics seem decent for their age, too.

Moving on to technical stuff, the game won't run out of the box on newer systems but with some community fixes it will run fine on Windows 10. It's surprising that there's still an active community for this game. People out there are still making mods with new quests, locations and storylines, some are even creating machinimas.

Gothic II is not a game for everyone. It's high difficulty, lack of hand-holding and clunky controls may put off a lot of people, but those who don't mind any of that are in for a real treat, a true gem of a RPG.

State of Decay: Year-One Survival Edition

★★★☆☆☆

State of Decay: YOSE was an impulse purchase I made back when the devs gave free copies of the "remaster" to those who owned the original version of the game. It seemed like a unique zombie survival game with its own quirks.

It has some interesting base building mechanics - while you're out doing typical zombie apocalypse stuff, the rest of the group stays occupied - they may work on something in the base, go on a zombie hunt, argue with each other or just rest. You can also switch between them. There's permadeath so once you die, that character's gone forever. I don't like how there are endless, repeating tasks in the game and how it's not immediately obvious which mission will progress the main story and which is just a chore that will come back eventually. After a while the missions get boring since you're doing the same stuff all over again. It doesn't help that the missions appear on a timer so once you progress through the story you have to wait until the game decides to give you the next mission.

As for the DLCs… Breakdown is basically the sandbox version of the main game. I was so not going to go through all of it again for some achievements so I skipped it and went straight to the Lifeline DLCs, which was okay. It puts you in a new location, adds a new, shorter story and adds a couple new gameplay mechanics, however it's still mostly the same game.

Additionaly the port doesn't seem to be good - my PC struggled to stay at 60 FPS, especially when driving around. The game also has lots of bugs - broken animations, weird car physics or NPCs not getting up after getting downed despite not being attacked.

If you're looking for something different than most of the zombie survival games out there, State of Decay: YOSE may be your thing. Personally I think it was decent but I don't think I'll go back to get the rest of the achievements.

Unfinished games:

  • Managed to complete the 2 territories CSD3 added in February. Back to waiting for more…
  • I finally got around to starting Mass Effect this month. Save for that one time a Mako glitched and launched me into space, I’m having a blast so far (no pun intended). Oh and thank you Cece09 for gifting me this game back in December, that was an excellect pick :)
  • Is it just me, or are Anomaly Warzone Earth and its “mobile campaign” almost the same thing? Since I played the mobile version earlier I think I should’ve skipped this one as I feel like I’m replaying the same game again… I’m not saying that it’s not fun, though.
  • Started Katamari Damacy REROLL yesterday to test my streaming to TV and playing on couch setup. Turns out, it works well! The latency is minimal, the image quality is better than I expected and the Steam Controller’s touchpads seem like a perfect fit for the game. I should really start playing more games on the couch.

Next up:

  • Mystery Game

    ??? hours playtime

    ??? of ??? achievements

  • I want to mix things up in my backlog a little so I’ll participate in the next Challenge Me! Which means 5 new mystery games this month. :)

Current progress

33.9% (187/552)
7.6% (42/552)
5.1% (28/552)
53.4% (295/552)

does not include games from the "won't play" list and non-Steam backlogs

Notes

I’ve cleaned my library of F2P games, so my “won’t play” list got a bit smaller.

Also I would like to use this opportunity to make a small BLAEO Generators announcement - recently I’ve released a new beta update and now I’m considering putting it on the main branch - is there something I should add before then? New functions, QOL improvements, more stuff/tutorials/templates in the Help/Resources tab?

oh and woooooo i actually managed to make this post on time without any delays

You’re really not shying away from the big older titles. I applaud that. For the last theme I played a bunch of older games, but all of them were on the shorter side. And I noticed that I’m getting more annoyed with clunky controls and unintuitive UI the older I get…

Thanks for writing up your thoughts on State of Decay. I have almost the same opinion about SoD. It’s a decent game, with a lot of interesting base building ideas. I really liked how you can switch between characters, I haven’t seen such a feature a lot in other games. But there are defintely some bugs and I also had problems with the performance on my PC…Damn, I definitely should have payed more attention to my save game, it’s going to be forever in my list of unfinished games ;(

I also have a couch, TV and Steam Controller setup, but I almost never use it. Only a few of the games I play are fitting for this setup. But when I get the chance to play a game on the couch, it’s really relaxing. As you say, I also should play more games on my couch :) Looking forward to the next games you’ll review. With Mass Effect you have another big game on your hands at the moment.

Yeah, some old games are still fun to this day and you gotta appreciate that those old games are stepping stones, used to improve and help make the masterpieces we can play today. I also like to tweak games and install essential mods/fixes so there’s no old game I can’t run :)

Crap, I should have given you a save of SoD before I completed it :( Not a perfect solution, but it would’ve helped you get back where you were.

Playing on couch feels so different compared to playing at a desk as usual. It’s definitely more relaxing as you said. You can also always lie down on the couch, which is a huge plus for me! :D

I’m looking forward to the rest of the Mass Effect series. It will take me ages before I get through all of the games, but it’s going to be well worth the time :) I wonder what I’ll review next myself, I guess it’s up to the person who picks the Challenge Me! games for me :)

I have only tried Gothic III many years ago and I don’t really remember much about it. If there is sale I can’t decide if I should grab the series or not.
But I really like your beginning, looked like a hobo! XD That’s priceless. ;D

Oh Mako, it’s fun with it. Also beware, they say you can’t end up on your back as you will get rerolled automatically, they couldn’t be more wrong. XD And now Shepard, don’t stand there looking pretty and go save the damn galaxy! :D
Have fun! ;)

If you’re not sure about buying the game yet then watch some gameplay of the Gothic games on YT. It’s not a game for everyone so you should check if you’ll like it or not.

I kinda wish the Mako would glitch me into space more often, those types of glitches are very funny to mess around with xD It reminds me of that swingset glitch from GTA IV. Man, that was so awesome to do.
And don’t worry about the galaxy! I’ll save it… after one more game of quasar.

Kyrrelin

Hahaha, you gambler! :D

couldn’t even defeat some random flies and midget goblins

Oh pls. It was hard to get game for me when I was a kid, so I had to play Gothic 2 when I get it. But I couldn’t. I was not able to walk down mage tower without being killed by flies. I tried over and over again with no luck.

Finally I found codes. It was a pain in the ass to write them in (not to mention understand how to even open console, never did that before wink marvin wink), but I did it! I spawned enough magic, strength etc. potions I buffed my stats to 100! And I was able to kill this nasty fly!

And damn, I loved this game. So much I replayed it like 10 times. Later without codes ofc, as I understood controls and combat way more. I remember one time I was spawning black ogres to kill them, and get this sweet sweet experience. Nowadays they’d count is as exploit and charge me 5 bucks for exp booster.

I was thinking about beating it again with graphic mod, but never had time to go back to it. Maybe after I’m done with games I bought during winter sale.

I finally got around to starting Mass Effect this month

Hope you have all 3 games, as it’s best in a bundle! It’s amazing how much you can bond with characters when you have 3 games to do so. And later even thought of a song can make you teary.
It’s not cry, it’s sea by which you collect the seashells

I’ll admit, I cheated a bit at Gothic II, too. It happened a few times in late game that I died while my last save was 15+ minutes ago, so I used cheats to revive myself to save time and frustration. I also flied across the map several times to get to certain places faster.

I kinda wish my backlog was so small like yours, there are some games I’d love to revisit but damn I just don’t have time for everything.

I have the 2nd ME game but not the 3rd game. I’ll definitely check out the rest of the trilogy… just gotta get that 3rd game somehow :P

Mskotor

That made me remember I cheated in Alien vs Predator classic, as I could not beat starting alien level with facehugger normally. So I turned on noclip :joy:

Sadly only Origin. Don’t think they will bring it on Steam, like they did with Fallen Order.
