July Wrap Up!

The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit

Captain Spirit is a Life is Strange 2 prequel/teaser. It's pretty much a good promotional strategy. I enjoyed this game but I found the "to do" list a little boring. I did enjoy clicking on all the interactive objects to learn more about the story and characters.
As soon as I reached the ending I wanted more so I'm very excited for LIS 2!

Death Road to Canada

I got this game in a trade and I'm so glad I did! Death Road to Canada is a Rogue -like survival game where you have to gather a team, gather supplies, and survive the trip to Canada. Each playthrough is different and even when it starts to repeat, the characters react to the situations differently depending on there traits. You can customize your character and choose between a vast variety of traits.

There are numerous easter eggs within the game and it has fantastic humor. Death Road to Canada has different game modes to try. I currently beat the game on normal mode, rare character mode, familiar character mode, short trip mode, and long winding road mode.

I definitely recommend this game to anyone who enjoys these types of games. The only downside I can think of is that the local co-op is pretty buggy. I tried playing with my boyfriend and it wouldn't let him join at times, he had to join every time we left the car or it wouldn't let him play, it would pick a random character for him to control instead of the one he made, etc. So be weary of local co-op.

Gone in November

Gone in November had a story it wanted to tell, but the execution was pretty bad. This lead to it falling flat. Gone in November is a walking sim where you do your daily chores and then you proceed to read the entire story of the game through broken english text. The story is confusing and you don't feel like you got all the details by the end of it. I see what the dev(s) were going for, and it really is a beautiful and haunting story, but a story alone cannot carry a game.
Also a side note, the the game was kind of buggy for me.

Overall, it's only a dollar and the intentions were good. I hope the developer(s) improves and tries to tackle something like this with a bit more practice.

A Hat in Time

I also got this one in a trade! A Hat in Time is a 3D platformer that is going to bring you right back to your Mario 64/ Mario Sunshine days. I honestly haven't played a 3D platform in ages and I forgot how much I love the genre.

In Hat in time, you have to collect all the time pieces. To help you do that, you have the ability to collect yarn and use it to create different hats. Each hat gives the Hat Girl a different ability.
The graphics are colorful and fun and the levels are super creative.

I love that they give you a camera that allows you to freeze frame and perfectly align a photo you want to take. It allows you to make some very beautiful screenshots. A Hat In Time also has mod support. The game is kind of endless because of the amount of new levels and challenges the modding community makes.

Honestly if you enjoy 3D platformers, this is highly recommended.

Nice progress! Yeah playing Yooka-Laylee a couple of months again made me realise how much I missed the genre, I’m really looking forward to playing A Hat in Time sometime this month, there needs to be more 3D platformers!

I really want to try Yooka-Laylee too! I know it had some mixed reception but I didn’t follow the hype so I think I’ll enjoy it. I hope you enjoy a Hat in Time!

JaffaCaffa

Glad you were able to get your hands on a copy of A Hat in Time and (most importantly) enjoyed it!

Ooh I watched a friend play some Death Road to Canada a year ago, but haven’t really heard of anyone else playing it. Always nice to find a “hidden gem” of sorts. :) Shame about the local co-op though, especially since they seem to be pushing that as a feature and not an “o yeah we added this too” sort of thing.

It’s a really great game! Just today I realized the co-op might be broken with two keyboards (my friend was using a wireless one). We just bought a gaming controller so I’ll let you know and change my review if it works!

JaffaCaffa

Fingers crossed!!
I know we always end up trying various fixes as well when co-op doesn’t work right at first, since it can be a bit finnicky depending on the game. Thankfully most games seem to have Xbox 360 support.

Captain spirit got me really excited for LiS 2 too! Most of the task were a bit boring even if the treasure hunt got me all emotional but it was a free teaser so at least it got it job done.

All those nice reviews about A Hat in Time, I definitely have to grab the bundle before tomorrow.

I definitely have to grab the bundle before tomorrow.

Awesome, I think you’ll enjoy it!

Have you played Before the Storm yet? Did you enjoy it?

EvilBlackSheep

I haven’t played BtS yet but I was thinking about playing it this month to be done before LiS 2 comes out, even if it’s not mandatory.

Nice to see someone else playing Death Road to Canada. It has such great humour and is quite a nice challenge. Personally I like the rare character mode the most as it is for most time quite relaxing to play. The extreme modes I just don’t find really fun although it is cool if you survive this sardine-packed super siege. Sadly, the new modes which will be add are not much different from the current game.
But one has to admire that the developers are still updating the game.
