Blue Ϟ Lightning

Sad Update about dropping.

I just went through my second ABC plan and replaced all the dropped games…in my first plan I just continued through anything dropped but I had already dropped like a third of the new plan…
since the start of this year I’ve been dropping quite a few games.
for various reasons I just dont want to play them anymore.
and some games are trash so I can safely drop them without any worry but other should be good games and its sad that I just can’t get in them…

A few games I’ve dropped recently.

Dreamfall Chapters: I’ve been challenged to play this 3-4 times now. Its a steamgifts win so I have another reason to want to finish this…but for some reason I just can’t get into it…I like story based games and this is popular but I just dont like it. I keep starting it and then 15 minutes later quitting it and doing something else.

The dialog is dumb and simultaniously childish and adult…like it moves from stupid to dark at the drop of a hat. in the first chapter/prolog you walk past people having nightmares-a women crying about her aborted baby or someone trapped in a burning building and you just say “thats so sad, rest in peace dreamer” and the way you say it just sounds fake…
like there are dark themes and the way you say things is worse than alot of fanfictions I’ve read…it wouldn’t be a big deal but its a story based game and dialog is an important part of that…

GOD EATER RESURRECTION: I’m 7(?) hours in and I feel like I’ve seen all the game has to offer…this game reauses the same gameplay loop over and over again and even though there are varried weapons and monsters everything melds together and feels the same…I had fun for about a hour and then slowly lost intrest over the next few. Also remembering LastM’s review saying it made him dislike gaming for awhile I dont want to go through that.

Wings of Vi: This game is too hard…and not in a satisfying way. Super meat boy is hard but the controls are tight enough that if you die you feel like its your fault…this game is full of cheap unavoidable damage sources and the platforming looks fine at first glance but plays really annoyingly. After like a hour of playing it straight my hands started hurting and while people in fourms just state “git gud” but unlike Dark Souls it just comes off as “learn to deal with it” instead of “try and get better”.
I get that its marketed as a hard game but dead cells is hard while remaining fun and this game is just hard.

Killer is Dead: I honestly dont think I like hack and slash games very much…I loved Nier, and had loads of fun with DMC, but I think that was due to the story/graphics and movement/grappling hooks respectivly. This game has higher production quality than I thought going into it but its not enough to make me want to continue…its also making me reconsider other hack and slash games I’ve been wanting to try…

welp these past few days I’ve dropped two of this months POP games…no chance on me dropping the third I’ve been wanting to read higurashi CH.6 for awhile but I still feel kinda guilty…sorry LastM 🙏

Trent

Ouch. You’re dropping one of my favorite games of all-time, and favorite in the genre. I agree the beginning in the Dreamtime is a little slow, but once you get to Europolis, things really take off, IMO. Oh well, different strokes, I guess…like how I don’t like anime, but I know it’s really popular. Did you at least get as far as Kian’s first appearance?

Blue Ϟ Lightning

yeah I played through the escape with Kian which was admittedly better than the prologue but honestly I just wasn’t having fun…I like story driven games but I guess I just don’t like this one.

Trent

Fair enough. I’m guessing you didn’t play the earlier games, The Longest Journey and Dreamfall? I’m guessing they wouldn’t resonate with you either. I actually like DFC a lot more than the first two games.

Blue Ϟ Lightning

I started the longest journey and it didn’t really pull me in.

Arbiter Libera

I definitely heard mixed opinions about Dreamfall Chapters ranging from unblemished praises to unabashed virtue signaling, or whatever kids call it these days. I just want to finish it to complete the trilogy. It only took over 15 years to get all three games made and it was up in the air the entire time.

Blue Ϟ Lightning

so I haven’t played enough of it to really give an opinion on the whole story. You can find people ranting online about themes present and how dare the developers have views they don’t agree with or whatever…

my problem with it is mainly the dialogue (which is the main way the story is conveyed along with the actions/animation I guess) is badly put together. Like I’m no English major my replies are all over the place and I doubt anyone would say I write well but the text in dreamfall reads like a 12 year old wrote it and I just can’t find it immersive.

Arbiter Libera

Could it just be “modern speak” I see people use online these days? I don’t really remember the last two games having such localization issues.

Blue Ϟ Lightning

I dont really know, one of the thing i like about brandon sanderson novels is they are written in plain modern english…why translate some mythical worlds language into an oldtimy speech. No its just nothing sounds like an actual person would say it everythings stiff and weird and i just remember feeling bored or cringing… Good luck trying it though

GiseIIe

yess to dropped games!! let’s play only games that we’re enjoying

I haven’t touched my second ABC list since forever, maybe I should replace them too??

Blue Ϟ Lightning

I’ve said before I’m mainly playing a challenge me/ a play or pay challenge every month and then when I finish those because I’m hopeless and just sit there staring at my library spending more time trying to figure out what to play than playing stuff I have an ABC plan…which if I were solely working on it I’d finish reasonably quickly but as its just a “to do when I’m lost picking” list with little priority it takes awhile to get through…

The reason I replaced stuff was cause I had dropped like 7 of the 24 games already and I didn’t want to say I beat the list when a third was dropped.

I honestly dont [sic] think I like hack and slash games very much…I loved Nier, and had loads of fun with DMC, but I think that was due to the story/graphics and movement/grappling hooks respectivly [sic].

I just beat that game, and yeah, I’d say it’s pretty typical of the hack ‘n’ slash genre. What made Nier: Gestalt stand out were the fact that enemies could shoot slow-moving SHMUP bullets, and while Killer is Dead has that a little bit with the laser-shooting eyes and machine-gun enemies, it’s not nearly as prevalent. I think the most a hack ‘n’ slash ever took advantage of its resources was Hyper Light Drifter, and that game used level design to fundamentally alter how players approach the situation a grand total of…once.

I haven’t played DMC, so I can’t say anything about that one.

Blue Ϟ Lightning

Oh hyper light drifter was great!

DMC devil may cry (the one fans dont like) has two grappling hooks one that pulls you towards stuff and one that pulls stuff towards you and you can jump pull yourself towards stuff in the air and continue pulling yourself towards flying enemies continuously escentially spending 10-20 seconds in the air comboing…honestly the movement in its what makes it stand out to me kinda like how prototype 2 was subpar for the most part but also real fun cause of its infamous style gliding around theough the air and smashing down on stuff

I haven’t played those games, either. :P I will say, though: your explanation reminded me of Vanquish, another game I haven’t played. I’ll just take your word on it for now.

Supernormu

You’ve dropped a few games I’ve had my eye on for some time, although they’re not in my backlog so I won’t know in the short term.

Drop away, I say. I used to want to finish everything I started, be it books, games, movies. But now I think it’s time better spent on something you do enjoy. Time spent on a game you’re just not getting into, could be time spent on another game that deserves your attention. Enjoyment shouldn’t be a chore.

Blue Ϟ Lightning

Yeah and at this point im really focused on my goal of getting through my whole backlog be it completing beating or dropping them…its time i could be using on other titles

adil

I feel the same about GOD EATER RESURRECTION. I don’t think I was able to keep going for as long as you did though. But reading about LastM’s feelings, I’m now glad I dropped it xD but sad I wasted money on it. It’s definitively not my kind of games.

Saikania

Oh, I feel so sad and sorry, that you don’t like Dreamfall Chapters. It’s one of my favorite games of all time and it gave me such a special experience, that I will never forget and I always like to remember.
I think, I forced you onward to play it some month (or maybe a year?) ago, that makes me even more sad, that you ended up dropping it.
I think you play it in English? I only can speak for the german translation and the voice actors have done a great job. But also I need 3 attempts to went through the beginning dream sequence and finally get into it and play the whole game.
Maybe you can give it another try some day. :)

Blue Ϟ Lightning

Of course i can try it again someday! And i feel like im letting people down for not liking it…my attempts at getting into it is closer to a dozen then 3 but ill try.
