Report #214: Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden

XCOM play-a-like

This was a big surprise for me seeing in the Humble Bundle monthly. When I got the key I immediately installed and played it. From the description and comments I was expecting a game, very similar to XCOM. Well, that is true and false at the same time.

True, it has a similar mechanic. Playing a squad, having turn-based combat and different skills and weapons. But your squad size is much more limited and you can actually walk outside of combat. Starting the combat is almost everytime up to you, and if you are sneaky, you can even avoid or silently kill single enemies.

Definitively recommended to get it for this cheap. Had a lot of fun. Not going for the very hard difficulty achievement

This game looks really fun as I loved XCOM: EU and am always down for an XCOM clone or similar style of game. I’m not sure whether it’s worth getting Monthly though, as I’m usually not impressed with the lineup as a whole.

I’m playing through this game now, and thus far, if I would get nothing else from the bundle than it alone, it would have been money well spent!

I haven’t played any XCOM games but I just started this last night and am thoroughly enjoying it so far. AFAIK you can’t change difficulty during a game which is unfortunate. I started on normal and am wondering if I should have done hard. I’m only an hour or so in (I’m an area after unlocking Selma) and so far it’s quite easy. I assume it gets harder though as you go?

in between it gets a bit harder, but that is usually because the lack of good gear. Once you get better gear everything is getting back to easy.
Also, if you keep attention on the enemy types (robot, living) you can adjust your gear in advance.

I haven’t played in a while but from memory you can actually go into settings and adjust the difficulty… Not sure though

Oh that’s surprising. I’ll have to have a look, thanks.

So glad it was included in Humble Monthly. On paper it sounds exactly like something I’d want from a game of this type, particularly the viability of stealth.

I’m really tempted to get this.. got this feeling that I’d enjoy it a lot.. on the other hand, given how small has been my playtime in the past months, it’s totally possible that it’d get a better discount before I manage to play it ^^;
Damn those first world problems >_< :p
