Update 123: September 2023

What an amazingly beautiful game. I really enjoyed this one a lot more than I expected at first. The story telling is sound, you get to know Aloy, a young motherless huntress. Outcast from her clan for that fact and raised by another outcast Rost. When she becomes of age she wants to win the Proving, a trial of her hunting skills and agility, to be accepted back into her clan and at the same time to get some answers about who her mother was and where she comes from. And off you go into this wild story about how the world ended and was reborn again.
I loved the battles with bows and arrows against these huge machines, having to pick the right ammo for each machine, using their weaknesses against them. Also loved that you could make some of the machines "friendly" towards you and then you had a decent mount that you could ride around.
The map is huge and stunningly beautiful from lush forests to arid deserts and snowy peaks. I sometimes just sat there and stared at the beautiful vistas.
If there is one point I did not really enjoy it is the fact that I sometimes searched for a long time to find a way up some mountains since I did not see the grapple points and I sometimes had to resort to reading walkthroughs to find them. Also sometimes gotten stuck on some of the parkour elements since the char did not want to grab on to the next point. But these are some minor points that could be solved by some back and forth.

The Slater

"The Slater" offers a nice storyline with stealth-action gameplay. However, the game's lack of a save system can be frustrating, forcing players to redo levels over and over again since they only save between chapters. And sadly the levels are not short. One mistake and you can redo the last 25 to 30 minutes easily.

Half-Life 2

F.E.A.R.: Extraction Point

6/10

no achievements

The standalone DLC F.E.A.R. Extraction Point is a nice addition to the original F.E.A.R. game. Giving you some more answers to what happened in the actual game, but sadly there are still questions left unanswered. It takes some tweaking to make it run on modern systems. Just check the forums for help.

Otherwise it is a nice FPS considering it's age.

Black Mesa

I don't get the hype over this game. Might be a great remake of the original Half Life games, can't say that since I never played them. But sadly I did not really enjoy it. Hated the platforming parts, half the time I did not know where to go. Did not understand most of the rather silly achievements. Alas it is done and dusted and I know to never pick up Half Life games.

Here are the games I'm currently working on. Reviews will follow once I'm done with the games:
I've won 11 games and got 3 gifted (thank you to Zelrune, Moony and Iocaio) and I've beaten 8 games, so that makes a total of +6 for the month of September. My backlog is a crying again. I'm at +28 for this year now *hides quickly from my backlog*.

Good luck with Alice in Wonderland! Hopefully it doesn’t take you as long as it took me…

I know I look at 20h+ completion time, though with these games I usually just tackle one difficulty at a time and do the others over multiple month. Cause I know they can get tiring if you do the same puzzle over and over again.

Zelrune

Congratulations on your assassinations! Your backlog grows ever stronger, but you still have 3 months! You got this! Do you plan to work on HZD in October?

samwise84

Sadly I needed the space for my PoP picks so for now it is not installed, but I will most likely return to mop up some of the things I have not explored yet. Not sure if a whole ng+ playthrough is worth it though 🤔

Black Mesa is actually quite a good game. Though, I thought that Xen was to long. And as achievement hunter, the game is a major pain with the damn “Carry” achievements ….. Other silly achievements are more or less in tradition to Valve. So, I was okay with them.

Also, nice to see Horizon Zero Dawn. I am usually not to much of a AAA player (ignoring my dozen Capcom games), so I was actually pleasantly surprised by the game. Especially, as I don’t like Open World games (and even more so Sandbox). But the story was pretty intriguing and it was connected quite well why the protagonist was the protagonist. There were still a lot of convenience moments like the order in which the bunkers have been opened up. Also, Elisabeth was a tad to much: diligent, highly intelligent and overly good-natured.

Black Mesa was just not for me. And yeah the cheevos in that are just ridiculous.

And same for me on the AAA games. If I play them then usually 5-10 years after they came out. But HZD was just a really good game, with a good story. Especially for a AAA game that nowadays mostly seem to try to have great visuals and be done with it.
