This is a 2D platformer metroidvania with melee combat. It's definitely one of the best metroidvania games I played so far. The story is kinda there but it has some funny dialogue. The combat is super good, there's just so much fun in suplexing/piledriving the hell out of skeletons and coming up with crazy combos. Platforming is tight and the maps have beautiful backgrounds and are full of collectibles, secrets and references to find. I played on Hard difficulty on my first playthrough and I'd say the difficulty was well-balanced. The techno-mariachi soundtrack fits the game very well and has a couple bangers as well. The only bad thing is that it's a bit too short, but I guess quality over quantity is better.

Looking forward to playing the sequel someday.

  • I’m in chapter 12 of Yakuza: Like a Dragon and I’m loving it so far! The story keeps me on the edge of my seat, gameplay is better than I expected (but still, I’d rather have the older brawler gameplay), substories are just as hilarious and heartwarming as in previous Yakuza games. I’ll definitely write a bigger review of this in my December report.
  • Super Mario 3D Land is simple and yet so fun. Only issue here is that the game makes good use of the 3D capabilities… which I don’t have on my N2DS. So sometimes I can’t tell what’s close and what’s far, especially since you have very little control of the camera.
  • Rhythm Heaven Megamix is quite fun. I liked how they brought back all of the good minigames from earlier entries. I just wish they didn’t bother adding a story to this game, those dialogues in-between minigames are quite annoying. Just take me to the next minigame damnit!

Next up:

  • Deus Ex Mankind Divided is one of the games I’m looking forward to after getting a new PC, so I’ll play it as soon as I’m done with Yakuza: Like a Dragon.

Notes

I finally bought a new PC!!! I jumped the gun a little and bought it a few weeks before Black Friday. I don’t regret that decision because the Black Friday deals sucked in my country, except for SSDs. I had to go with an Intel build since the Ryzens got a hefty price increase in the recent months, so I ended up with a i5-10400F and a 3-fan GTX 1660 Super. Yakuza nearly runs like a dream on it, with 1080p almost max settings running at almost stable 60fps. Can’t wait to throw more demanding games at it!

Yakuza now must look lovely compared to your previous PC. Glad that you’re enjoying it! I stopped playing Kiwami mid-game and recently got Kiwami 2, I really need to get back to it someday!

kubikill

Thanks man! It def looks much better now! And good luck with the Kiwamis :)

Congrats on your upgrade! And yep, Black Friday sucked. I wanted to buy some things but nothing was on sale. x-kom’s ‘sale’ was a joke this year. I have Yakuza 0, still haven’t played it yet.

kubikill

Thank you! Yeah I’m never going to wait for a Black Friday ever again if it’s so bad here. And do play Y0 someday, it’s an awesome introduction to the series.

Black Friday is bad for some time now, from what I see. They just wait few months to rise price and dump promotions on stock that don’t sell well. Or give the same discount I normally see on the item all the time.

kubikill

Yup it’s that bad. I guess the real Black Friday starts a few months earlier or later.

Gratz on the new PC! I buried my plans of upgrading this year some time ago, with everything going out of stock so fast, but at least there is something to look forward to in 2021! I heard so many good things about the Yakuza games that I definitely have to try one myself. Damn BLAEO always giving me new ideas for games to play :D

kubikill

That’s too bad but yeah, the new hardware definitely looks promising. I’d be excited for it if I could afford it, let alone find it in stock. We’ll see how it’ll go in 2021 :)

I definitely recommend the Yakuza series! They have really good stories, fun gameplay and goofy side quests :) If you do decide to try it out, you should be able to snag Yakuza 0 for just 5€ at 75% off in the upcoming Steam winter sale. It’s an amazing deal considering how much content it has.

And yeah it wouldn’t be true if I said that BLAEO didn’t recommend any games to me. It’s a good place to find out about new interesting games… at the cost of increasing my backlog lol

I’m glad I grabbed my PC back in Jan, before I went to visit family in Feb. A lot of things were already out of stock or with higher price when I was back in UK in March…
