ABZU

ABZU ⭐️⭐⭐⭐☆

Won on SteamGifts Atmospheric Walking simulator
3,4 hours playtime, 12 of 12 achievements (100%)

Abzu is game about exploration of underwater world. You swim around, observe fish and swim some more. Graphic is nice and music is soothing. So it's nice to play if you like this kind of swimming-simulators and can relax that way.

But if you're not into this kind of games without gameplay or plot you can end up bored (not counting this little background story that justify your "boss fight" at the end of the game). Levels are small and repetitive (one open area + checkpoint location), meditation was IMO pointless as I don't know english fish names, and it doesn't support my native language.

But if you care about achievements it's super easy to grab them all. So it's a plus :D

Contrast

Contrast ⭐️⭐⭐⭐☆

Platformer
3,8 hours playtime, 22 of 22 achievements (100%)

Platformer game where you help little girl in her "quest". You learn some backstory about girl's family and your goal is to help her with her parents. Levels are small and looks like they were taken out of someone's dream - you can walk down the street to see that at the end of it road ends in "nothing". Or that objects are in strange places.

Cool thing about this production is shadow-mechanism. You can basically switch between "real world" and shadows in some places. Sometimes it requires solving simple puzzle where you have to align shadows (casted by moving object) on the walls to proceed further.

It's also easy to grab 100% achievements, as collectibles aren't hidden in terribly strange places and game isn't grindy.

The Turing Test

The Turing Test ⭐️⭐⭐⭐☆

Won on SteamGifts APG Win Puzzle
6,7 hours playtime, 15 of 15 achievements (100%)

Puzzle game that at the beginning looks like Portal. In Portal you use portals to move around levels, in TTT you use EMP gun to open / close doors or move platforms / pistons. In both games you work with AI, although in TTT connection is more strict. But that's most of the features that connects them. The Turing Test has like 70 rooms to solve (+7 extra ones) and I beat it in 100% in ~6,5h. Which gives 5,5 min for one room. So not really long. There is also some bio-engineering stuff - in journals, chemicals and so on. But it's more like my kink, as I'm biotechnologist. People who aren't interested in it won't care about it most probably.

I consider this game as entry-level to Portal-like puzzle solving. It can teach you basics of reasoning and a little bit of level back-tracking (tho it's really obsolete game mechanic). But if you already beat Portal 1/2 and Talos Principle (esp with Gehenna DLC) this game will be piece of cake for you. So you won't find challenge here.

Extra rooms are nice and slightly harder than regular rooms. But it'd have to be more of them than 1 in section to make game challenging. Also game suffers from small amount of graphic glitches that can look weird - textures that doesn't fit in the corners, so you can see purple "background", bottles that looses their labels when picked up or pill bottles that doesn't have "exterior". Only floating label and pills inside :D

Victor Vran

Victor Vran ⭐️⭐⭐⭐☆

A-RPG Hack&Slash
27 hours playtime, 34 of 50 achievements (68%)

Some time ago I beat another A-RPG, H&S game - Van Helsing - and it was so boring and repetitive. But Victor Vran is not like that. Sure, you basically chop your way though waves of enemies, but VV doesn't have tons of unfunny references, bad level-up system and stiff classes.

In fact there are no classes at all, your abilities depends on weapon you use - sword, scythe, hammer, pistols, rapier, arc gun. Every weapon have it's own abilities and define way you play. You can switch weapons at any time to match them to your playstyle. On top of that game has destiny cards - they basically give you more defense, attack, crit chance, life drain and so on. So it's like in Paladins, and it gives you wide range of customization.

It's H&S, so story isn't deep or really good. You're monster hunter which has to defeat enemy and lift up the curse. So nothing innovative here. But co-op works way better than the one in VH, in Helsing it was bugging and not fluid. And killing enemies is really funny :D

ENSLAVED™: Odyssey to the West™ Premium Edition

ENSLAVED™: Odyssey to the West™ Premium Edition ⭐️⭐⭐⭐☆

Won on SteamGifts Action
16,5 hours playtime, 51 of 58 achievements (88%)

Enslaved is nice action / Prince of Persia game. Action takes place in post-apocalyptic world, where machines hunt humans and enslave them. One slave runs away and with the help of other seeks revenge. More or less, don't want to spoil it ;D. But plot is decent.

Graphic was improved after conversion to PC (mostly enemies and NPCs), but background quality can be really poor. Cinematic camera work is annoying at times and controls are clearly made for gamepads. It works well in main campaign where you kill enemies with stick, but very poorly in DLC where you have to use sniper rifle to kill enemies. At the beginning game may be challenging, but after you upgrade shields it's hard for enemies to kill you. At least on normal, I didn't try hard. Fights are smooth and their mechanic is easy. No complicated combos to learn or smth.

And few games I'm playing recently

- Dark - SG win. It's stealth game which is playable and without game-breaking bugs. But it's also bad, enemies are stupid, save system is stupid, plot looks shallow so far, animations are stiff.

- Road to Gehenna DLC from Talos Principle (2 of 4 ach) - played a little more, tho I'm bored with it quickly. So it will have to wait for better times - just like last month.

- Star Wars: knight of the Old Republic (53 of 57 ach) - Since last month I did HUGE progress here. I pretty much beat DS playthrough, and after that I have to load some older LS save and get achievement for owning LS powers and listening definitions of love. And 100% will be mine. Muahahahah

I don’t have more plans, as my spare time is non-existent as of late ; _ ;

Nice progress and reviews! I really like how you implemented the star ratings. I’ve been trying to do something similiar to but my coding skills are 0% :p

Any ideas on what you’ll play next?

Mskotor

Stars are normal symbols, so it’s enought to copy and put them after text - ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

You can adjust their size by putting them between <h></h> tags. Like

KOTOR ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

<h1>KOTOR ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆</h1>

KOTOR ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

<h6>KOTOR ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆</h1>

You could even rate them with cats or dogs :D You just have to find symbols you like on sites like this

And I will beat Mushroom11 or Evoland 2. I’d like to play in longer games like Tales of Zestiria, but I have shitty memory and I have to play them all at a time. Otherwise I will forget about plot. But I don’t have spare time now so they have to wait.

Thanks for the help! I may try the rating system on my next post if you don’t mind me using the idea.

Let me know how Evoland 2 is, since I’ve been eyeing that game lately.

I agree that The Turing Test seems easy after Talos and a few other similar games, but the story is very nice, and I found it pretty interesting even without knowing anything about bio-engineering =)
Did you solve the last puzzle by the “right” way or by throwing the cube to the pressure pad?

Mskotor

This room? I used my own brain (and body :D)

Arbiter Libera

I was wondering when KotOR1 got Steam achievements until it clicked you were talking about the sequel. :)

Fnord

Will you actually stick with Dark long enough to beat it? It does sound like it works better than your average Ubisoft title, but that’s not exactly setting the bar very high.

Mskotor

You have no idea how much I’m annoyed by this game. Save system is utter shit (auto saves are rare and you have 2 manual saves to use on one level, lol xD), but at least enemies are terribly stupid and it’s easy to quickly run through level when you learn their paths).

I see that there are 6 chapters in total, and I’m on 4th. So I will make it, I know I can D: I just have to drink a lot of calming herb tea while playing. Lol.

Douglas

Awesome progress and games you played there!! Woah Congratulations.
I know that Portal/Talos and Turing don’t have anything in common except they’re all puzzle games, but would you recommend play Talos or Turing Test first? Both are in my list of games to play soon and I looove puzzle games (Portal is still my favorite one).

Contrast and Victor Vran are also games I wanna play. I actually started to play VV in co-op, but they stopped playing and I never came back to it D: - I’ll probably end up finishing Van Helsing first as it is a sg win and keep the best (VV) for later :D

as collcectibles aren’t hidden in terribly strange places

This is how all collectibles should be x.x really, I don’t how a normal person can find some of them in some games. I love to explore while playing my games, but some stuff are so hidden that I wouldn’t ever find them lol

Mskotor

Do you have Road to Gehenna DLC?

The Turing Test is quick and nice, with kind of Portal-like story. So start with it if you want to beat something without much thinking about philosophy and actual puzzles.

Talos Principle is both longer and harder (esp Road to Gehenna DLC - separate from main plot). It also containts plot that orbits around religious / God will theme (IMO it’s really good :D). You can run through game and get “normal ending”, or spend more time to solve all puzzles and have “real ending”. So it’s also something that differ those 2 games, Talos is way deeper than Turing Test in case of plot and world complexity. Start with it if you can play slowly, and spare time to read computer journals and ask yourself “what is better - to have free will and live in not-so-nice world, or don’t have free will and live in paradise”.

You can start Victor Vran from moment you ended playing in co-op, story is independent. I also beat it in co-op, but I also played solo a little to get some achievements along the way.

In contrast it’s more about perspective and timing - you have to either use weird camera angle to find glowing orbs (which count as collectibles), or jump in right moment to get to some place.

Douglas

Yes… I have this DLC. Bought it not much time ago actually :D

Oh, I didn’t know that Road to Gehenna was harder than main game. This is actually really good \o/ puzzles, hard or not, are always good in my opinion :D - I heard/read about this phylosophical theme in Talos and how deep it is if compared with similar games involving puzzles. It was the second reason why I bought it \o
I think I’ll start with Turing Test then. Currently playing DOOM and Shadow of Mordor, too long games, so I’m sure I’ll want something short after finish them.

I gonna play Van Helsing first because it is a SG win, and also because I wanna save the best for last :D Started playing both and even in the first areas, I liked VV more than Van Helsing.

“Jump in the right moment”… watch me failing many times hahahah but it is an amazing game that is in my list of games to play soon :D
Thanks a lot Mskotor for all the explanation. It helped me a lot :3
