April’s Stats

aka. The addiction got worse and the backlog exploded

Hi everybody, another month is over so it’s time for another update. So… hum… remember my last update where i was telling you about my addiction to Slay the Spire? Well… not only it didn’t get better, but I developed 2 more game addictions, to Civilization VI and For the King. So despite some good amount of gaming this month (even if work was busy), I didn’t slay many games from the backlog. Also, I received some really nice birthday gifts (thanks again) so it kind of got out of control, like every year in april and december. On the plus side, all I played this month was really good and satisfying gaming. I also revived my 3DS and started playing Pokemon Ultra Sun, and I’ve sunk about 30 60 hours into that, mostly when I was outside of the house. How have you all been doing this month?

Lara Croft GO

11 hours playtime, 17 of 17 achievements

Lara Croft GO is a pretty cool and relaxing turn based puzzle game where you have to guide Lara across a more and more complex series of levels. I really had fun with this and played it over a week end. It was the right amount of difficulty I'm looking for in a puzzle game and introducing new mechanics with every set of levels. It's also visually very polished and pleasant, and makes pretty great screenshots. I highly recommend it if you like puzzle games (It also exist on Android. It was a bit uncomfy on my small smartphone, but on a tablet it's probably way more enjoyable).

Nantucket

26 hours playtime, 25 of 25 achievements

I had high expectations for this game when it was on my wishlist, and they were met and exceeded. It's basically a choose your own adventure Moby Dick. You're the captain and your ultimate goal is to find the elusive white whale but you start from almost nothing and have to prepare yourself for this ultimate confrontation. You recruit your crew, improve your ship, hunt whales and explore the world map. It was really addictive and even tho I first went in thinking I'd not go for completion, I ended up liking it so much that I went for every single last achievement before going to finish the story. A really great hidden gem.

Hidden Paws

3 hours playtime, 7 of 7 achievements

Hidden Paws is a really cute, yet quite different hidden object game. Forget what you know about HoG, this has nothing to do with your usual Artifex Mundi game. In this one you move your camera around each 3D scenes, trying to find every cat and yarn balls that are hidden away. The design of the game is really lovely, but sadly there is one flaw, which is quite an annoying one. The camera movements are inducing quite a lot of motion sickness. I was prepared thanks to Lenor's warning from her last post, and still it did hit me pretty hard. I had to play the game through short sessions of 2 or 3 scenes max at the time, as I was getting really dizzy. I hope the devs address that issue in their next game as I think it's really worth playing.

How have you all been doing this month?

Good news: My backlog is dead and will probably stay dead in the near future… \o/
Bad news: …because I moved Layers of Fear to “won’t play.” I still don’t feel like playing anything else… Worst case of “post-game depression” (I know it’s not really depression. I just used it for lack of a better term.) after NieR:Automata… T_T

EvilBlackSheep

Huge congrats on the good news :3 You can always move Layers of Fear out of the won’t play if you ever feel like it. I know what you mean though, I call it ‘post game emptiness’ and it happens to me every time I finish a long game I was very invested in. It tends to past after a while but it always hit me hard. I hope you manage to find something you feel like playing soon hugs

IcyGlare

Hmm… I guess that’s a more accurate term. :) When I got that “I can’t play anything else because this game was so awesome!” feeling because of great gameplay, atmosphere, design, or whatever reason, the effect usually lasted only for a week or two, at most, and not this bad. It’s been more than a month since I finished my first Automata playthrough and the effect still hasn’t worn off. I’m usually detached when playing games. Heck, those games that some people said made them cry only made me feel bored. Automata probably hit me very hard because I can somehow relate to the game’s themes and characters (especially 9S near the end of Route B and beyond, minus the SPOILER becoming insane and going on a rampage part :p /SPOILER).

EvilBlackSheep

Well at least I saw you solve the problem by going back for more Nier :p

IcyGlare

Yeah, it’s the only game I can play right now. :p

Forsaken

I’m so sorry to hear that you also have had motion sickness with Hidden Paws. It’s really sad when an adorable game you actually enjoy can make one feel that physically horrible.

You’ve got some fantastic new additions to your backlog, especially those two Amanita Design games :) I can’t wait to play Chuchel sometime in the future.

EvilBlackSheep

It’s ok, the game was still worth it, like you say it’s just sad that such a cute game makes you physically sick, especially because i’m guessing it will get some people to either not try the game or get a refund for it :(

I’m really excited about Chuchel, I might actually play it really soon (plus it fits the monthly theme :p). I generally love Amanita Design games. They are always so adorable both in sounds and in design.

JaffaCaffa

Agh I was gonna add Hidden Paws to my WL, watched the trailer, got excited…then saw your warning. shakes fist That’s the 2nd game I went to add that had a motion sickness warning. :( Massive bummer.

Ooh I’d never heard of Nantucket before, glad you loved it! I’m diggin’ the interesting, befitting art style. Also particularly excited to hear your thoughts on Card Crawl and Churchel, enjoy!

EvilBlackSheep

You can always try and get a refund if you don’t like it. It’s really sad because the game is really cute and a good HoG, I hope they’d fix this in their future works.

If you don’t mind games with a lot of text, Nantucket is really a blast. Card Crawl and Chuchel might get played this month hopefully, so watch out for next month’s report.

86maylin

For the King is fun with friends~Although we tried to finish it but ended up only had two to three sessions together. :<

EvilBlackSheep

Oh, I only tried the solo for now but i’ll definitely have to try the coop mode too. It was really harder than i thought it would be though, I got rekt’d on the easiest difficulty when I reached the second big boss dungeon.

MouseWithBeer

Oh my god, I need Hidden Paws in my life but I have been having really bad motion sickens problems in the past months :( I will still add it to my wishlist and hope for the best :/

EvilBlackSheep

It’s sad because it’s really cute. At least the game isn’t too long so played in short sessions of one level or two at the time, you can still do it.

MouseWithBeer

Yea, also quite cheap so if it is too bad for even sort sessions it is not too big of a loss.

Formidolosus

Hmmm right, nantucket goes onto the wishlist, and hidden paws goes off it. Maybe they’ll fix it one day, but with so many other games to play, ones that make you feel sick shouldn’t really be on the list.
I’m also keen to try tiny rails, but I guess I’ll wait a bit on that one. Is it enjoyable?

EvilBlackSheep

I wouldn’t recommend it, I made my gf remove it from her WL, so i’ll tell you the same i told her. It was kind of fun at first but now it turned into a massive grind almost similar to if it was a clicker, but where you need to be active to progress. So overall it’s fun at first and then turns really tiring quite fast. The only reason i’m trying to finish it is that it’s a SG win.

If you have it already, give it a try for a few hours, but don’t go out of your way to buy it.

Formidolosus

Thanks for the heads up. Guess it will go onto the, “only if it’s in a cheap bundle” list.

Kaleith

Nantucket looks interesting, I just ignored it when I checked the store page for the first time as the screenshots all looked uh… pretty dry? :P
Lack of time in the future means I won’t add it to my WL, but it does look nice.

I also revived my 3DS and started playing Pokemon Ultra Sun, and I’ve sunk about 30 hours into that

Don’t blame me, cat is 100% innocent of any crime and time is not refundable

there is one flaw, which is quite an annoying one. The camera movements are inducing quite a lot of motion sickness

So I don’t need to play this after all. Just no, nope, get it away from me, I can’t stand getting dizzy from games anymore :sadness:

EvilBlackSheep

You should add it to your list tho, it’s pretty good.

Don’t blame me, cat is 100% innocent of any crime and time is not refundable

RIGHT. :glares: Also i realized that I just hit the 60 hours on pokemon, not 30 as i thought i did. :aaaa:

Hello, best sheep! Here’s a skanda post!
