Guille36

Introduction

Hey there! For thoses of you that dont know me, Im known as Guille36 around both steam and steamgifts, along with most other gaming and online platforms. In addition to steam games, I play League of Legends and Osu! fairly frequently. Some of you may recognise me from the (too) many giveaway groups I am in, although Im more of a shy person so I generally dont post much in public threads and giveaways. Ive been a long time user of the BLAEO website but this is my first post (and hopefully not the last). Im not very good at writing so bear with me but hopefully my ideas get across. Ive been looking at a few formatting guides and tweaked them to make my post but Id be interested in knowing more if you guys have tips and tricks to make nice looking posts.

Methodology

Heres how I usually go about playing my backlog lately: I divide them into genres I like most (in my case rhythm games, platformers, visual novels and RPGs) and allow myself to start one of each plus one not categorised at once for a maximum of 5, so that I can play any genre I feel like at any given time. The reason main reason I put theses restrictions on myself is because when I didnt, I had trouble finishing any game as I would consistently just start another game that piqued my interest and never come back to finish the first, leaving most games unfinished.

Goals

My goals are rather generic and serve more as guidelines than actual rules as I dont like restricting myself too much. After all, playing games is supposed to be fun, not a chore. With that said here they are:

-Play any game I start to completion if possible.
-Give higher priority to games given to me from friends or from SG
-Reduce the number of activated/bought games (in comparison to before)
-Finish more games than I activate
-Disregard any of the goals above at will if I dont enjoy doing so

With all of that said lets get into the actual post!

Overall progress
5% won't play
76% never played
11% unfinished
3% beaten
4% completed
SG wins progress
6% won't play
82% never played
8% unfinished
1% beaten
3% completed

Platformers

Poi is a fun 3D platformer, strongly inspired by Super Mario 64 in both the movement (triple jump, jump-dive, wall jumps, etc) and game mechanics (collect the stars medals in various worlds, 8 red coins key pieces medals, 100 coins medals, etc), while having its own light atmosphere created by its unique artstyle and joyful soundtrack. It also has a large variety of minigames and extra zones you can do at your own leisure. The minimal story leaves room for the main focus of the game which is exploration and platforming, collecting medals, coins and extra collectibles as you go. My only gripe with this game is some of the enemies hitbox and behavior, which are a bit unclear and unintuitive, but thats minor in the whole scope of things.

STEINS;GATE

Visual Novels

STEINS;GATE is a fantastic science fiction visual novel about time travel and the consequences of it. It features momorable characters, including a self-proclaimed mad scientist, as well as a great and deep story. While at first I was unsure about the visual style of the game, I quickly came to like it as it creates a unique atmosphere that fits the story very well. The only downside is that you probably will have too look up a guide if you want to reach the true ending since it requires a very specific set of choices.

Hollow Knight

Platformers

Hollow Knight is one of the best 2D platformers I have ever played. Review over, go play this game! In all seriousness though, the platforming is top notch, the controls are tight and the difficulty is just right. It is fairly challenging, especially in the boss fights, but oh how satisfying it is when you finally beat that boss youve been stuggling on! Unlike many in the genre, it never feels unfair. Its your skills againt the game, no luck, no bullshit involved. It has a unique world to explore and little constraints in how to go about it other than the abilities you posess. It lets you discover the story slowly through the visuals and events happening around you more than through the few npc dialogues it has. Overall fantastic game.

Final verdict: Strongly recommended
Final rating: 10/10

Cuphead

10 hours playtime, 14 of 28 achievements
Gifts from friends Platformers

Cuphead is a mix of 2D platformer, run and gun and shmup elements. It features mostly hard multi-stages boss battles coupled with a few run and gun stages. It was fun but still fairly challenging for about the first third of the game, after which the difficulty ramped up drastically into punishing territory, The problem isnt so much that its hard, but also that it feels unfair. Its not rare for boss attacks to emerge from the side of the screen where you are without any warning or for attack patterns to corner you completely. Add to that that the game mocks you after every loss (its funny once or twice, after 20 defeats in a row, not so much) makes for a pretty frustrating experience. Its too bad because the visuals were pretty nice and the concept could have been great otherwise.

Final verdict: Mixed

Yay to first post! throws confetti
That was an overload, wasn’t it? Sry, but still: YAY!

And another VN player <3

Also your idea do go at things sounds pretty nice!

Have a blast and always fun!
Happy backlog killing :)

Guille36

Yay indeed! You have no idea how long it took me to make it XD Glad you like it!

Forsaken

Welcome.

Can Heat Signature be played without having to kill or take down anyone?

Guille36

Thanks! As far as I know its possible but alot harder since youre limiting yourself alot on both the kind of missions you can take and the strategies open to you on the ones you can take. Could be a nice idea for a challenge though!

Forsaken

but alot harder since youre limiting yourself alot on both the kind of missions you can take and the strategies open to you on the ones you can take.

That really is not a problem for me. As long as I know that it’s possible to do, it’s more than enough. Because unfortunately for me not a lot of games give the player that option. Thanks a lot, I’ll keep a close eye on this game then as it seems to support pacifist playstyle.

Formidolosus

Congrats on finishing poi. Keep meaning to go back and finish new game plus as I’ve done everything else, but always get distracted by other games. I’ve heard the final fight is quite tricky with only one heart.

JaffaCaffa

That’s the only thing that’s stopped me from playing new game +. I got frustrated with the boss during normal mode with inverted controls…there was one particular spot I got hit with every single time. The thought of having to do it with one heart…good grief.
Kudos to Guille36 for completing it! And good luck to yourself whenever you get around to it. :)

Formidolosus

Yeah the whole game used a certain kind of control scheme and suddenly the last boss fight it was all mixed up. I only just made it even with multiple hearts.

Guille36

Thanks! I had fun with the game so I figured why not go for it. As for the final boss I though it was pretty easy actually (I beat it on the first try on new game+). Just prioritise shooting the projectiles he throws at you over shooting the crystals and youll be fine.

tsupertsundere

Hi, nice to meet you! Best of luck in killing your backlog.

I’m excited to see you play Little Busters! It’s a game I have my eye on and am excited to pick up and play sometime soon. I’ll be looking forward to seeing what you say about it.

Guille36

Ive already read the fan translation of Little Busters! (regular edition) and Im having a hard time finding the motivation to replay all of it when I have so many unplayed VNs. Its a really long VN after all, and the translations arent so different that it matters alot. Dont get me wrong though, its a great VN, one of my favorites even. It has many routes, the story is great and the minigames are fun. I think Ill just play the common + the additionnal routes I havent read from the ecstasy version and call it beaten.

tsupertsundere

I understand that. I almost never replay games I’ve beaten before - even ones I’ve liked a lot - because I’m the same way. I like my experiences fresh.

But that’s great to hear c: Now I’m looking forward to it even more!

Lucky Thirteen

Hey Guille, welcome to BLAEO!

I would consistently just start another game that piqued my interest and never come back to finish the first,

I used to do that a lot, too. Sometimes, it still takes a lot of willpower to finish some game instead of just starting another one and never coming back, but BLAEO has been really helpful so far :) I wish you the best of luck!

Guille36

Thanks! Ive been here for awhile tho, just not posting :)
And yeah, sometimes just organising it a little goes a long way. Now I just need not to fall in the trap of looking at my progress too much instead of actually working on it XD

Narayan

Reasonable goals mean that there is higher chance of sticking to them :) Congrats on your first post. Hopefully more to come :) Pretty impressive beating Cuphead! :D

Guille36

Indeed! Thanks, definitely will be more posts! Might not do them very often like some do but there will.

uguleley

Now look at that, first post here and formatting is already top notch!

Being less restrictive with goals is a good way to go, have fun with your next games :)

Guille36

Heh, thanks! I worked alot on it, taking parts of others code and customizing it for mine. Quite a bit of learning but it was fun doing so.
