September/October 2018 Update

Spooky threats

To keep in line with Spooktober I received multiple scary threatening messages like the one pictured above. I guess I’d better post a new update :3

Sooo… In the past couple of months I’ve (sorta) come back to having some time to play, so I’ve taken down around a dozen games.
While that sounds pretty great on paper, it was mostly pretty short titles and I’ve been really weak in the past 6 months, adding close to 50 titles to the backlog (yes, I know T_T)

Still, I hope plan to have more free time early next year to get more slaying done, and in the meantime I’ll keep nibbling at the beast whenever I can squeeze some gaming in.

It’s nice to be back, now let’s slay some games again! he blatantly lied, again, not having played a single game so far this month

The Red Strings Club

In my previous update I mentioned the fact that I was looking forward to going back to finishing The Red Strings Club, and boy it did not disappoint.
I could talk about the gorgeous pixel graphics or the amazing soundtrack, but what absolutely steal the show are the storytelling and the themes.

The vast majority of the game's mechanics pivot around its dialogue system, and your choices definitely do matter in shaping the narrative. I don't think I've ever found myself stuck so many times at a dialogue choice, carefully weighting the possible options and comparing them to my own ethical and moral stances.

If you're into narrative-driven games this is an absolute gem, definitely recommended.

I won Life Is Strange: Before the Storm on SG so it was the perfect time to go play the original :3

After playing it I can say I'm surprised that it stood up to all the hype and raving reviews I saw coming into it, and I'm actually excited to play other games from the developers.

I didn't like many of the younger characters at first, but then it dawned on me that it meant they were well-written and I'm just an old fart :v

The game was a rollercoaster of emotions and unexpected twists, all compressed in a package that while a bit clunky at times still puts to shame the tired Telltale (RIP) formula seen in so many games from this particular "choices matter" genre.

I hope Before the Storm will be a worthwhile game to play next, although the reviews and the first impact I got by playing the first 20ish minutes do not bode well :/

SIMULACRA

I don't mind horror games. I like "found phone" games. Games with cheesy FMVs are my guilty pleasure.

Based on those 3 sentences and on the fact that I replayed the game multiple times to 100% it you might guess I liked the game, but I can't say I did.

The main reason for that is the overuse of jumpscare attempts, with the seeming intent to make you drop your phone on the floor by startling you with sudden blaring noises, strong vibrations and fullscreen creepy images.

Needless to say most of those effects are lost in the PC adaptation I played, with the vibration replaced by sound and the "fullscreen" images only appearing on the small portion of your screen taken by the virtual phone you interact with.

I don't find jumpscares scary as much as I find them annoying, and there were so many of them in this game that I felt pulled out what could have been an otherwise engrossing experience. It's a shame, as I genuinely did like some of the mechanics of the game and as I said I don't mind the bad acting in the video clips. Oh well :v

Subsurface Circular

Mike Bithell's Thomas Was Alone was a critically-acclaimed mix of narrative and platforming gameplay.

A few years later, Bithell does away with gameplay completely, presenting a dialogue-driven narrative that is short and straight to the point, only taking 1 to 2 hours to paint an interesting world without having your character ever leave its seat in a subway car.

The ending was maybe a little bit disappointing, but the journey there was still worth it if you're into narrative games.

Little Nightmares

After the disappointment I had with SIMULACRA, here's a Spooktober game that does horror right, with hardly any reliance on jumpscares and a focus on creating a creepy and disturbing atmosphere.

The game has a nice mix of platforming, puzzling and exploration though a set of 5 long levels each inhabited by a monster.
While I didn't love the controls which were occasionally unresponsive - especially trying to grab stuff - the issue didn't detract too much from the experience, which was engrossing all the way to the end.

It doesn't rely on trial and error but you're still expected to die quite a bit. Checkpoints are plentiful but sometimes a little too spaced apart, meaning that I had to replay some 2ish minutes-long sections several times because I was messing up right before the next checkpoint.

Definitely recommended if you liked games like INSIDE or Black the Fall, or even if you disliked the latter due to it being infuriatingly trial-and-error. It's not as bad, I promise :p

Burly Men at Sea

I feel like this should have been right up my alley but instead, at least for me, Burly Men at Sea fell right on its face.

Burly Men at Sea is a choose-your-own-adventure game with just 3 "choices" to make during each story, which at the end loops you back to the start, expecting you to embark on a new journey.

After the first couple of rounds you realize that you're mostly going to have to sit through the same few scenes over and over just to reach the point where you can make a different choice. Many multiple-paths games do that, but they usually include a skip or fast-forward option. That feature is missing, and sorely missed, in BMAS, making it a chore to experience it fully.

Everything feels sluggish, with glacial walking speed, unresponsive interactions and so on; I'm not sure if I should blame an incompetent adaptation from a clearly touch-oriented interface or a willing attempt to mask the fact the game doesn't have much to offer besides the neat aesthetics and the occasionally humorous dialogues.

I don't know if I'm being too harsh but I kinda regret having spent the time replaying the game to completion, expecting a payoff that didn't really come.

skanda

Wow, I can’t imagine what kind of a monster would send those messages.

Kaleith

Yeah, you wouldn’t expect that kind of abuse around here

Blue Ϟ Lightning

positively hurtful

I really enjoyed Simulacra so sorry to hear it wasn’t your thing. I’m glad you enjoyed Life Is Strange and mot of the other games though!

I have the Red String Club on my wishlist but I didn’t really know anything about it. Now that I know it’s narrative driven with choices, it’s going way higher on my wishlist.

Kaleith

The Red String Club is up there in my nonexistent list of best games I’ve played this year, I’m really glad I got the chance to play it by winning it on SG. It’s published by Devolver Digital and they’re pretty bundle-happy, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it popped up in a bundle in the not so distant future.
As for Simulacra I’m clearly in the minority considering the very positive score on Steam, but jumpscares are a pet peeve of mine ^^

JaffaCaffa

I keep forgetting that I recently picked up Subsurface Circular in the bundle, been super hyped for it. Need to get to that one ASAP, thanks for the reminder! Didn’t realise it was made by the Thomas Was Alone team, that’s neat.

Sorry about SIMULACRA. :/ I played Replica a few months ago and was underwhelmed, it wasn’t bad but it definitely didn’t bring anything really new to the table like I was hoping. So SIMULACRA was my next go-to of redemption for a hopefully better phone game. Ahh fingers crossed I like it more than you did…I just wanna play an interesting phone sim!!

Hope Before the Storm improves for you as well. Despite all the mixed reviews am still really curious to play it myself. Having loved Chloe in the first one I just think “it can’t be that bad, right?”. I loved Life is Strange way more than expected but had a few issues with it and kinda put it into perspective, so I’m hoping with less hype attached the sequel will be good (enough) still.

Kaleith

The reviews for SIMULACRA are really positive so don’t let my experience get in the way of you trying it for yourself. It’s weird to think that I’ve played maybe half a dozen “found phone” games so far but I can’t fully recommend any of them, maybe I just have unreasonable expectations >_>

RikkiUW

Glad to see another LiS fan! It’s one of my favourite games. I really hope the second game lives up to the first, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s impossible to live up to such high standards.

And thanks for you Red String Club review! It’s on my wishlist too, glad to see it’s as good as it looks. I also really like story driven games, it sounds like we have some similar tastes.

Kaleith

I believe The Red String Club might pop up in a bundle sooner rather than later due to the fact it’s published by Devolver Digital. At least I hope so, I feel like the game deserves a lot more attention that it apparently got

RikkiUW

They do appear to have quite a few games that have been bundled, but it’s fairly recent so it may not be bundled for a while yet. I’ve tons of games to play it the meantime though, so I’m willing to wait.

Trent

Heh, I’m an “old fart” who just played LiS myself a couple of months ago. I loved the characters and the characterization from the start, though. It felt like I was in a modern high school / private art school. It might have taken me 43 hours to complete the game, though… Don’t mind me…I just had to reply basically the whole game in a separate playthrough, and get the photos I missed at the same time.

I’m really looking forward to Subsurface Circular. Maybe I’ll bump it up since it’s so short. And I was hoping to play The Music Machine for Spooktober, but I didn’t get to it. And I didn’t realize Old Man’s Journey was so short…maybe I’ll bump that one up too. :)

Kaleith

You can select any chapter and section of the game and play it in “collectible mode”, which is specifically made to quickly get the missing photos without affecting your save or your choices :c

I didn’t even realize that The Music Machine could have qualified for Spooktober, too bad I played it too early :p
The game was a little confusing at first but overall I enjoyed it, I had already liked A Wolf in Autumn by the same developer so I should probably try to grab his other walking sims

Trent

Yeah, I found out later about collectible mode…but I wanted to replay the game anyway and try different paths/choices.
The Moon Sliver is also by that author…played it a long time ago. I enjoyed it for what it was. It had more gameplay than A Wolf In Autumn.

tsupertsundere

This is a really nice spread of reviews you have here, Kaleith!

In particular I’m getting more and more excited to play Little Nightmares… whenever I can get to picking it up.

Mskotor

Me: Waters plant on window sill
Game: This decision will have consequences
Me: Should I reload last check point, and prevent Max from doing that? D:

This game was stressful at the beginning xD

And nice to see yet another positive review for Little Nightmares. Makes me want to play this game even more.

Kaleith

I’ve never been much of a green thumb so the outcome of that particular decision didn’t surprise me. RIP :v

EvilBlackSheep

Only a month later, I get to read your update, thanks to the new subscriber feed thing. Sorry I had overlooked it, I think it was while i was away, and then I never saw it.

You did manage to actually play stuff again indeed, is it time to get you MHW for xmas? :eyes:

Thanks again for sparing me from playing Simulacra, and now Burly men at sea (it looked interesting but you’re the second person I read that found it boring after a while, so I guess i shouldn’t get a key for it).

Kaleith

Yakuza 0 already has all of my time for the foreseeable future, so no MHW :eyes:
