It's been a while since my last update. Again... I keep quitting but then start feeling the urge to talk about the games I play because I believe they are worthy of being talked about. Therefore I end up being back momentarily to post something and then go back into hiding in the shadows. Again... I guess this is the loop I'll always find myself in regarding BLAEO. I can be silent but I still frequent the feed or my profile to keep track of things and the people I care about.

I tend to post very long and comprehensive updates, I also hate spamming or taking over the entire the feed so I really wanted to work on a new template. Being a totally clueless person with codes I finally managed to come up with something I am half satisfied with. The most important new feature is that "Reviews and Screenshots" tab can now collapse. In this tab, "Click for Review" and "Click for Gallery" buttons, that can be opened and closed at will, have also been added. My reviews and screenshot galleries won't clutter anyone's feeds anymore. Victory!

As usual I won't be reviewing each and every game. However if you have any questions about any game please don't hesitate to ask.

PS, all the colours in each tab and button have been carefully selected directly from the official Illidan artworks by utilising a colour picker tool called Instant Eyedropper recommended to me by the lovely Coraline Castell.

METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN

211 hours played

MGS V was actually my GoTY in 2015 but that only lasted a couple of minutes because then I played Witcher 3. MGS V can be an extremely satisfying experience for those like me who prefer pacifist and ghost playstyles. There are multiple non-lethal takedowns and they all have different timers before the taken down enemy regains consciousness and alerts not only guards within that camp but also nearby camps. If you play the game in a non-lethal predator style it is essential to destroy their radio communications equipment located somewhere in big camps so the enemies that regain consciousness won't be able to call in for reinforcements. Yes you can also get a tank in mission preparation screen, hell even call down a chopper to aid you but you'd have to ask someone else about that as my playstyle is vastly different. I'm the "do-what-you-need-to-do-quietly-without-touching-anyone-and-get-out-without-a-trace" type of stealther.

MGS V allows you to have buddies that you can take with you during missions, they are basically companions but the game calls them buddies. You unlock these buddies as you complete main missions. Early on in the game you rescue a puppy and extract him to mother base. When you go back to mother base Ocelot talks about the puppy and states that he will train him. Some main missions later the puppy grows and becomes my most favourite buddy D-Dog that can sniff out enemies making them appear on your minimap, lure or distract them by barking or later on in the game even take them down lethally or nonlethally via buddy equipments you can research or unlock. You can also have D-Horse which is just a horse but a very cute one, Quiet who is the highly underdressed sniper and D-Walker which is most likely a great option for loud playstyle because it is equipped with so many different weapons and technologies. You can only pick one buddy to join you.

One of my favourite features about the game is that the enemies adapt to your playstyle. Before starting a mission you are taken to the mission preparation screen where you pick out your equipment from body armour to weapons, from buddies to vehicles etc. Once you pick your gear you will need to select when the mission should start. It could be dark, in the morning or immediately. I always started my missions at night and eventually the enemies started wearing night vision goggles. The game also registers which body part you prefer to hit with your weapons. If you always go for headshots the enemies start wearing helmets or extra bullet proof vest protection if you go for torso.

My biggest gripe with the game is the repetitive side ops. As a completionist I simply have to do everything there is to do in the game and if the game gives me optional objectives, you bet that I will take them on. There are about 150 or so side ops and majority of them are pretty much the same. "Eliminate or extract tank unit", "eliminate or extract heavy infantry unit", "eliminate or extract armored vehicle unit". You do this over and over again like 60-70 freaking times. Same goes for the remaining side ops too. Another thing I don't like is how the score system works. While it is true that you get bonus points when you don't get detected or don't kill anyone, nothing can even come close to the high points you get as long as you are lightning fast. One known way to S rank a particular mission is to simply get a tank with you, rush into the compound with it, rescue the guy, get out, call down a chopper for extraction, use the tank while the chopper arrives, get on it and end the mission. That's it. As long as you are fast it really doesn't matter how you do the mission because you are pretty much guaranteed an S rank regardless of the chaos you create. Whereas my meticulous approach to each mission with a lot of finesse would get like A-B or even C because of how slow I am. I wish time didn't affect it that much and the ranking system employed a similar system to that of Thief or Splinter Cell Blacklist. In those games you get points based on your playstyle, so if you did a lot of stealth takedowns and did not get detected, you get predator and your rank is according to the predator playstyle not ghost.

This is a very big game and I know I did not talk about so many things so if you have any questions about the game please ask ahead.

Little Nightmares

Little Nightmares is truly a gem. There are hardly any games that make me think about it for a long while even after I'm done playing them and Little Nightmare is one of them. In the base game the player controls a little kid called Six who is kidnapped and being held captive in a massive ship called The Maw. Very early on in the game you realise this is no ordinary ship and it is being used to cater to the needs of a very horrendous gluttony... In the DLC you control a boy called the Runaway Kid who is also trying to escape from The Maw. The base game and the DLC ending are linked in a very chilling and heartbreaking way. The graphics and the OST are simply wonderful. Just taking one look at the art style and the design of the game can tell you how much love and passion went into its creation.

Throughout the game you have to use your small form as a kid to hide from the many horrific monsters that The Maw doesn't have a shortage of and wits to solve puzzles. Each monster has their own strengths and weaknesses and most of the time you will find yourself sneaking in order to get away from them. However I found the controls a bit annoying as it's a 2.5D platformer, so there are times when you think you are aligned correctly but you end up jumping to your death as you barely miss the platform you need to jump on. I also wasn't a fan of having to hold the grab button pretty much the entire game as you fall if you don't hold the button. On the controller it's R2 and I always hate having to press those buttons as it gives my hand cramps. So the whole process of sprinting while pressing square and then suddenly switching to X to jump and pressing R2 to grab on a ledge jolted constant pain to my right hand.

I should also mention that there is absolutely 0 words being uttered in the game to tell the story. The narrative is completely wordless but the visuals and the soundtrack are more than enough to immerse you into the story so much so that I didn't even want to read the free comics at first because I thought "words" would break the immersion. I've never had such a thought before. The atmosphere of the game is very dark not only in graphics but also in the themes it deals with. A lot of the characters as well as the universe the game takes place in are surrounded by such a mystery that one can't help but ask thousands of questions and nit pick every detail they can find inside each room in order to catch clues and form their own theories. Dogmas and I have exchanged theories for hours on end and didn't even realise how time has passed. This is not something many games can succeed in doing.

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice

Hellblade tells the story of Senua embarking upon a journey into Helheim to defeat Hela and save the soul of her loved one. Like having to fight all kinds of horrific otherworldly enemies and overcoming the challenges set by the gods are not enough, she also has to do all of that while dealing with psychosis. I found the combat quite clunky and I greatly disliked the auto target system which is something I always despise in games. However I did not play this game for the combat, I played it because of the story and because I wanted to know how they incorporated the subject of psychosis into the game and that's exactly where the game shines so bright that it'd be enough to blind anyone.

The developers were in constant contact not only with neuroscientists and mental health specialists that became an expert on the subject but also people who actually deal with psychosis. The people who live through this every day shared their experiences with the developing team and all these experiences are in one way or another implemented into the game. Then during further testing, the game is tested by these people so that they can critique if the implementations were accurate enough. So basically the game was developed while being monitored by those who know exactly what psychosis is. The result is absolutely astonishing because we, as the player, can really experience the world like these magnificent individuals do. They can see shapes and make connections in the most amazing way so we also have to find shapes that are formed by different elements in order to progress. They hear voices and therefore we also do which is why playing Hellblade with headphones is strongly advised. Sometimes they can have very limited vision so a chapter is played solely in darkness. Sometimes they see colours in the most lively and vibrant way and we also witness this.

What Ninja Theory achieved with Hellblade is a remarkable proof of what games can accomplish as an art form and as an educational tool. I also would like to give a standing ovation to Melina Juergens, the video editor of Ninja Theory who has never done an acting job in her entire life. She performed the role of Senua in the most perfect way possible and I can not think of anyone who could ever outdo her astonishing performance and all the awards she has won with her performance as Senua are completely justified.

Ken Follett's The Pillars of the Earth

31 hours played
41/41 achievements earned

Pillars of the Earth takes place during the Medieval period in a fictional town called Kingsbridge, England. The story it tells spans over 40 years. The world is full of power hungry clergymen who are using the word of god and their high position within the church ranks to meddle in politics, abusive leaders like kings and earls who mistake fear for respect and loyalty, war, hunger, drought, conspiracies, treason, massacres, romance... You name it. Among all of this are one selfless Monk who wishes to repair the Kingsbridge Cathedral to make it worthy of god, one stonemason whose dream is to build the most beautiful cathedral anyone has ever seen and an outlaw boy who finds that life has a lot more in store for him than just hunting and surviving in the forest. Fates of these characters are intertwined for a common goal; to turn their hopes and dreams of a majestic "Kingsbridge Cathedral" into a reality. The game allows us to witness the story from the perspectives of 4 playable characters: Philip - Prior of Kingsbridge Cathedral, Tom Builder - the stonemason/master builder, Jack - an outlaw boy who grows up to be a brilliantly talented architect, stone carver and a sculptor and Aliena - Earl Bartholomew's daughter who has to fight alongside her brother, the rightful heir, Richard to take back control of the Earldom of Shiring.

Very recently I had a chance to read The Pillars of the Earth from Ken Follett. I made sure to read it before playing the game just to have more information about the story. I can easily rank it among my most favourite novels of all time. When it comes to adapted works, my heart always wants the adapted version to stay as loyal to the original as possible but my brain is aware that this is not a realistic wish. The game is absolutely fantastic and it can easily stand on its own even for those who haven't read the novel. I guess this is a good place to state that you absolutely don't have to read the novel to understand the game because everything is laid out in a comprehensive manner and explanations are always provided to the player. However for those who read it, there are some big differences in regard to certain characters which can really be off putting. Overall story wise the game stays very loyal to the book. It's the creative freedom they took with certain characters that I found inaccurate enough to bother me. I will not be spoiling anything of course so don't worry but I'd like to give a vague example. Alfred who is Tom's son is my 2nd most hated character in the novel. Yet he can be quite decent in the game. While he isn't a saint by any means, he is definitely not someone to hate as much as I hated the novel version. My most favourite characters from the novel are Jack and his mother Ellen. Especially Ellen is portrayed to be an incredibly strong and badass woman, but sadly in the game she can be somewhat weak and passive with the exception of a very few scenes. There are some major personality differences in the character Prior Philip too. Considering these are my most loved or most hated characters, such conflicts kinda annoyed me but again I know it isn't realistic to expect 100% loyal representation even though for the most part this game IS indeed loyal to the book.

As far as the gameplay goes it's quite limited. It feels more like a walking simulator than a typical point and click adventure game. Yes you pick up some items along the way but they are minimal in numbers. There are no puzzles with moon logic and the game progresses very smoothly. It's pretty much impossible to get stuck as your instructions are very clear, not to mention items and people to interact with are very limited. There are many locations you will be visiting but each chapter takes place in one location with very few areas to visit so you won't have this one huge map in which you need to travel from one place to another clicking everywhere frantically and using every item you have on every interactive point in hopes of getting something right and therefore progressing, like the way it is in most point and click adventure games. Things really are not vague like that at all. Think of it as one of the recent Telltale adventure games but with a bit more gameplay involved. There are 3 books in total, each one containing 7 chapters. If you don't fastforward any dialogues and try to do some small side objectives which are not required for main story progression, you can expect a total of 20-23 hours of gametime. I finished the game twice but during my 2nd playthrough I skipped majority of the dialogues except when I made different choices so I have around 31 hours played overall.

I can easily rate Pillars of the Earth among my top 3 point and click adventure games. It boasts beautifully designed landscapes and sceneries. I couldn't help but take screenshots from like 90% of the game. Personally when I think of Daedalic, one of the first things that come to my mind is bad voice acting (and moon logic puzzles but I already established that they don't exist). This is definitely not the case with Pillars of the Earth as the voice acting is absolutely fantastic. Daedalic definitely went all the way in for this game which is further proven by the fact that even the bestselling author Ken Follett himself gave his voice to one of the minor but recurring characters. My top highlight is Philip voiced by Glen McCready and 2nd one is adult Jack voiced by Alex Jordan. Music throughout the game also feels very chilling and fits the overall historical romance theme of the game perfectly well. My only criticism when it comes to gameplay would be not having the option to pause or go to the menu during dialogues. I should also mention that cutscenes and animations can't be skipped, dialogues in cutscenes can't be fastforwarded and double clicking doesn't make the character run. However double clicking when it comes to location changes makes you travel there instantly.

Trine 2: Complete Story

54 hours played
97/97 achievements earned

Trine 2 is a very colourful and lighthearted platformer in which you can control one three characters with different abilities and can switch between these characters whenever you want. Unless you are playing in a group and character mode is set to "classic" which means a player will always play the character they are assigned to and won't be able to switch until the end of the chapter. However if the character mode is "unlimited", anyone in the group is free to switch between three characters whenever they want which can be chaotic in a hilarious way as you might have let's say 3 Zoya in your screen and you don't know which one is you. It's a very visually pleasing game with an enjoyable soundtrack and smooth gameplay. It's one of the very few platformer games I really enjoyed in a genre I truly hate. I also liked that it allowed me to play in a pacifist way with the exception of boss battles. Amadeus is my favourite character and he has an ability to put enemies in boxes. So instead of killing I had the chance to utilise my pacifist playstyle into the game as much as it allowed me, trapping enemies in boxes so that I could progress without being harmed myself or harming any enemies. There is a limit on how many boxes you can create so when I go far away and trap new enemies, the previous enemies I trapped in previous locations will be untrapped as their boxes will be destroyed. No real harm done to anyone! :P

However 100% completion in this game is like something that you don't wanna see even in your darkest and worst nightmares. I have finished this game ages ago and enjoyed it thoroughly. But it was when I saw someone achieving 100% on it that I came up with the brilliant and genius idea that "if this person can 100% it, so can I!" With that ridiculous motivation I went into the game to unlock the last 3 achievements I needed, one of which required completing the DLC on hard difficulty + hardcore mode and the DLC is already significantly harder than the base game even on the easiest difficulty. Inanimate objects were punched, skins were bruised, swollen fists were submerged in cold water, hair was torn out. After a lot of self mutilation I got it but I'm seriously asking myself if it was worth it because now I am despising a game once I really enjoyed. I'm pretty sure it wasn't worth it. If you are a completionist and not a platformer expert, tread carefully with Trine 2.

Last Day of June

4 hours played
21/21 achievements earned

Last Day of June tells the sad story of Carl reliving the day of a fatal car accident that took his wife June. He is doing everything he can in order to stop it from happening to save her life. You get to play with different characters and try to undo whatever part they took that caused the car accident. The Groundhog Day effect is very strong in the game because even when you are done with a character doesn't mean you are done with them for good. For example you play with the Kid and get through his part and then do the same with the Best Friend or the Hunter and then you need to replay the kid again to open some path that the best friend or the Hunter will need to progress further into their stories and so on. The actions these characters take are interconnected to the actions of the other characters, therefore you will often need to replay a character just to be able to do another act with another character. Each character has two endings to their stories with the exception of Tunter who has 3 endings. To give a more concrete example, you need to end the day with the Kid by doing something other than picking up the rope and flying a kite with it so that the best friend can use the rope to end her story in a different way. This goes on and on...

The actions the characters take are quite limited and the world is rather small so it's pretty much impossible to get stuck in a story as you can only interact with very few number of objects that will unlock one of two endings for a character (or three for Hunter). Unfortunately it's impossible to skip cutscenes so everytime you switch between characters in order to progress with another character, you need to live through the same car accident cutscene over and over again. If the cutscenes were skippable the game would have been much more of a joy to play, and when I mean joy I don't mean in the traditional sense because it is still a sad story as the developers Ovosonico did a great job of conveying the messages of loss, grievance and not to mention denial.

Hidden Paws

2 hours played
7/7 achievements earned

Hidden Paws is an adorable 3D hidden object game in which you find missing kittens and their yarns to protect them from the cold environment. The game features about 12 or so beautifully designed winter landscapes and there are a set number of cats and yarns to find in each of them. When you are playing a level the game shows you how many you need to find and by hovering over the cat or the yarn icon you can get a hint as to the general location you need to search to find them. The developer is quite involved with the player base, constantly replying to comments and questions not to mention fixing or adding anything the players are talking about. A broken achievement was fixed in a matter of hours, new camera options were added when players criticised it, a hint system for yarns was implemented when someone suggested it and camera moving when game is idled was removed when a player mentioned how annoying it made the game. If that developer is not an angel that should be supported then I don't know who is.

However, there is a major flaw in the game; though I don't know how the developer could have avoided it, maybe he isn't even aware of it. It induced some serious "motion sickness" to the point of making me rush to the bathroom because I overplayed it even though my body told me I should stop. I know some members of BLAEO experience motion sickness so I strongly urge you to play the game in very short bursts if it's something you are interested in. If you take breaks after finishing each area before the motion sickness takes its toll, you will be able to easily manage the condition while also experiencing this wonderfully crafted game overloaded with cuteness.

The House of Da Vinci

8 hours played
6/6 achievements earned

When describing The House of Da Vinci, saying that "it's like The Room but longer and with more complicated puzzles" would be pretty accurate. It's a "let's escape" type of game meaning in order to leave the room you are in you must solve a number of puzzles and do the same thing in the next room and then the next etc. The game has a bunch of mechanical puzzles with intricate animations. As the locations you need to work on are far bigger than the ones you deal with in The Room, the player has to pay a little more attention to the clues or a new object they obtain. That being said as long as you explore each and every area carefully, it's pretty tough to get stuck and it has a rather well designed hint system that gives you a more definite clue each time you use it after it recharges over time. The first hint hypothetically could be something like "this handle I just picked up has to fit somewhere", basically meaning it is usable provided you find where it fits (sometimes objects you pick up may not be readily usable). The next hint will be less vague and then the 3rd which is usually the last hint will tell you the exact location you need to use the object on.

Sadly this game also made me suffer a lot from motion sickness. The way the camera zooms in and out or moves to a location you clicked on induced some serious motion sickness but not as much as Hidden Paws did. I still had to take breaks while playing this game to manage my condition though. This kinda surprised me because The Room has similar camera movement and I didn't get any motion sickness from it but maybe that was because it's far more limited in terms of where the camera can go and the chapters are significantly shorter than The House of Da Vinci. I can't say for sure. Fortunately the game saves every action you take immediately so if you have to take a break, you can return to the exact state you left the game at. The achievements require you to find collectible items in the form of real sketches belonging to Da Vinci which are hidden in almost each chapter. But fear not because even if you somehow miss them (they have a glow), upon completion of the game you will have access to every previous chapter from the main menu so you don't have to start the game from the very beginning.

Marie's Room is a free walking simulator which tells the story of an unconventional friendship between Maria and Kelsey. We play as Kelsey and visit the room of Maria 20 years after something happened in their friendship. Upon interacting with Maria's journal in the beginning of the game, Kelsey goes back 20 years to remember the memories that took place in the past by interacting with various objects in Marie's room and ultimately the revelation about their friendship is provided to the player. Marie's Room has incredibly pretty graphics for a free game. The story is quite intriguing and the voice acting is very impressive considering that this is a short and a free game. I respect the developers for making Marie's Room available for everyone free of charge especially because I could definitely see myself paying a couple of dollars for this game. I played the game twice to get the achievements I missed during my first playthrough. So the average play time for Marie's Room could be somewhere between 30 to 35 minutes.

Robin

Robin is a free game that deals with the subject of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) in which each playthrough takes about 3-5 minutes. Being someone who is self diagnosed with CFS, it naturally piqued my interest greatly. In the game you have a bunch of tasks waiting to be done but you have only a limited amount of energy so you are physically unable to do all of them. You have only the weekend to do what you want your character to do and you need to strategically use your energy wisely in order to make your character happy at the end of the weekend with your progress in terms of getting your house chores and work done while also not dismissing your personal needs. Feeding the bird, taking a shower, cooking, washing the dishes, checking social media, working, watering the plant, reading, tidying the pile of clothes on the floor and so on... It's all up to you to find a balance between your professional and personal responsibilities as well as leisure activities. It's a very simply designed game with very basic gameplay mechanics so don't have high expectations. I liked it a lot though, as I found it greatly relatable.

The Longest Journey

Before The Longest Journey I considered Amanita Design's Machinarium as my most favourite point and click adventure game of all time. The Longest Journey easily surpassed any game I played from the same genre and it's gotten so far ahead that I need to play something that's seriously on a masterpiece level to replace it (Ken Follett's Pillars of the Earth comes very close). Its protagonist April Ryan is such a funny and adorable character that I felt a special bond forming the more I played the game. I actually felt quite emotionally distressed when it ended because I did not want to say goodbye to the game and April Ryan herself. Lovable protagonist with a sense of humour, gripping narrative, immersive storytelling, very well written and informative dialogues, knows when to be funny and when to be sad or emotional; The Longest Journey ticks all the boxes of what a point and click adventure game needs to be. But it is not all good because one of the boxes it also ticks is "moon logic". There are so many games in this genre that go out of their way to make their puzzle solutions ridiculous so I don't know if it's something the genre naturally should have or avoid, if it's the former The Longest Journey has plenty of those. Unfortunately some of the puzzles are so totally bonkers that I had to glue myself to a walkthrough in order to progress. Without a walkthrough I can easily see myself clocking over 50 hours in this game and that is not even a guarantee whether I would get to see its end or not.

I went into the franchise head on by playing the last installment, Dreamfall Chapters, first. This was a big mistake. I had so many questions about so many things once I was done with Dreamfall Chapters. The Longest Journey fills in a lot of the blanks and provides insane amount of information about the universe the franchise takes place in. It's an invaluable game that should not be overlooked, ignored or skipped by all point and click adventure fans or players who want to play the franchise no matter how old it is. I should admit that I became quite angry once I found out that iOS has a remastered edition of The Longest Journey with better graphics and for some reason this is not available on PC. Nevertheless play it even if you think its graphics might hurt your eyes. Besides April Ryan has some very important inventory management skills she needs to teach you.

Despite being an obsessive completionist I'm finishing games much faster than acquiring new ones. What's left of my backlog is seriously getting even smaller. But things won't end even when the backlog ends. I plan on replaying some games for nostalgia or simply to get some more achievements. Not to mention Crate announced the upcoming Forgotten Gods expansion for Grim Dawn. On top of that there is Jurassic World Evolution which got 10 Goldblums out of a possible 10 Goldblums by Jeff Goldblum who will be reprising his role as the Mathematician Dr. Ian Malcolm to guide the players in the game so I can't wait to play that too. Simply put, my interest in gaming isn't ending even though I feel it getting more and more limited due to my pickiness, unique and niche playstyle as well as shifting priorities.

All that being said, I have to admit that I found myself at a distance from gaming. These moods tend to usually last 1-2 weeks but this particular one has been ongoing for close to two months. But I am not complaining at all as I finally rekindled another passion of mine: Reading. During my abscence from gaming I finished the following books: Metro 2035 (oh yes I AM PREPARED for Metro Exodus!), Origin, 1984, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, Picture of Dorian Gray, Dracula, Frankenstein, Fahrenheit 451, Duma Key and The Pillars of the Earth. Currently I'm reading The Book Thief. I'd like to thank dear EvilBlackSheep for motivating me to start using Goodreads again.

I have a massive volume of Les Miserables being shipped and a bunch of other books like Dreamcatchers, Atlas Shrugged (inspiration behind Bioshock games) and A Clockwork Orange in line. I am set for months and I don't even feel the motivation to play anything because I am extremely excited to catch up on them, complete my Ken Follett collection, discover new authors and read the books that inspired the shows I really love such as The Terror and TURN: Washington's Spies. Thank you AMC for quality TV shows by the way.

Enjoy your backlogs!

I feel a little foolish, but I completely didn’t realise that Ken Follett’s The Pillars of the Earth was based on a book. Looking at the Goodreads page is ringing some bells. I vaguely remember thinking it didn’t sound interesting enough for me to invest in a 1k page book a couple years ago and didn’t think much of it, other than surprised I hadn’t heard of such a famous author/book before. Glancing at the reviews it looks like opinions are very polarized, which immediately makes me intrigued what side of the spectrum I’d be on. Anyways I’m glad you found not only a book, but a game too that you adored. Like you said, it’s rare to fully enjoy both once you’ve adored the original, but I’m glad you were able to appreciate it for what it is. :)

I was actually gonna ask you if you struggled with falling off at all in Little Nightmares. I had no idea there was a grab button I should’ve held on to though, shall probably do that when I continue on. I played the first 45 minutes or so and at one point I fell 10? 15? times in a row off the top of a series of ladders. I found myself comparing it to INSIDE a lot, which I adored and kept trying not to..but man in this one I was struggling with the controls and depth perception a lot for some reason. Still need to get back to it sometime, I just wanted to distance myself from the comparisons since I’d freshly played INSIDE at the time. It was certainly beautiful and creepier than I expected, can’t wait to see how the story unfolds.

I really appreciate you giving the heads up about the motion sickness with The House of Da Vinci, that is surprising.

I just installed Marie’s Room, it looks beautiful and like something I’d really enjoy. Always cool to see some well-made free games. Perhaps the team will make another (different) longer game and charge for it, since this has such positive reviews.

Great reviews as always, see you around the next time you decide to pop around. The Book Thief is fantastic btw, one of my favourites. I especially loved the audiobook narrator. Hope you love it too. I’ve been really missing reading lately myself, after reading all the time life happened and I took a year break, am really missing it. Tried one that I was expecting to love a few days ago but couldn’t get into it, must try again and find the perfect book to get me hooked again. :)

I never would have thought in my life that I’d enjoy a historical fiction novel. I normally don’t like anything that has the word “historical” in it so it came as a great surprise to me when I really enjoyed the book. When it comes to polarized views in popular things, mine tend to be on the negative side so this is one of the few times it’s actually positive. I think the existence of such strong female characters like Ellen and Aliena during those medieval times definitely helped and it might even be why I enjoyed it. Each character I liked a lot from Ellen to Jack possessed some kind of a quality I could relate to.

Yes you are definitely falling because of not holding the grab button. It certainly sounds like we experienced the exact same gameplay problems with Little Nightmares. I can definitely see the similarities between Little Nightmares and INSIDE by the way and I agree with your decision to distance yourself from LN while the INSIDE experience was still so fresh on your mind. I hope you’ll get to finish LN and enjoy the story because while the gameplay can be clunky, the atmosphere is fantastic in my opinion.

It took me a while to get used to Markus Zusak’s style in The Book Thief. At first the reading experience didn’t quite feel as smooth as I’d have liked it to be due to the use of many German words or sentences. Definitions are given only once or twice for each new German word or sentence and then I am expected to remember them when they reappear. I’m at around 280 pages now and I’ve gotten used to this style but it still annoys me :P I struggled to read even 10 pages when I first started the book but right now I can read 100 pages and still feel like reading a bit more before quitting for the day. I wish the author’s style agreed with me though. I definitely would enjoy it a lot more then because the story is actually extremely interesting.

Reading is such an awesome hobby, I’m so glad I could get back into it as I haven’t read much in ages. When I started playing Pillars of the Earth there was only one day in which I didn’t read a single page cause I was so curious about the game. Later that day I kept thinking of how empty the day felt because I didn’t read anything especially after getting used to reading around 100-250 pages per day for the past 2 months.

May I please ask the name of the book that you couldn’t get into? I also hope that you’ll find the perfect book and immerse yourself in it :)

Thanks a lot for your comment :)

JaffaCaffa

I love historical fiction, but I have a really hard time getting myself to pick them up. (I’ll read one a year, it’ll become a new favourite…and then I won’t pick up another until the next year. Repeat the cycle. haha) Another one I LOVED was All the Light We Cannot See. But even then I loved reading it in small chunks, taking my time and really appreciating the language/setting. If I read it for an hour+ it just didn’t have the same enjoyment, definitely a different mindset and style compared to other books. It’s always great to see strong, flawed female characters, immediately makes me more interested in the book now tbh.

Ahh I can completely see that with The Book Thief. I actually think that’s what I loved so much about the audiobook form, the accents for all the characters were done so well and it added to the whole experience. But I can see how if I’d read it in physical form the first time that probably wouldn’t have come across so positively, and by the time I reread I already had that knowledge. Just thinking about that book and reading has a big smile on my face though, man you’ve definitely sold me on getting back into it (thank you -and Sheep- for that!). I used to read a couple books a week and it is quite sad not reading, like I’m missing something. I tend to go in spurts of really wanting to play games and neglecting other hobbies and then going on reading binges and playing less, but I’m usually still reading something. Taking breaks are always nice, but it’s awesome seeing people get back into something they love!

The book I tried was They Both Die at the End. I’ll prob give it another chance later on, but right now it just isn’t doing it for me. Not only do we the reader not know what’s going on, but both narratives don’t either. And I have a hard time getting into those style books if it’s not gripping enough. This is a slower contemporary too, but I loved More Happy Than Not by the same author Adam Silvera. Think I’ll pick up one of my 2 most anticipated books of last year, The Boy on the Bridge (a sequel to one of my all-time favourites The Girl With All the Gifts) or Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor. :)

Forsaken

Thanks a lot for all the book recommendations. I added All the Light We Cannot See to my want-to-read list on Goodreads. They Both Die at the End also captured my interest actually. What you said about it sounds alarming though but I’ll still keep it on my wishlist to try it out when I run out of books to read. I am undecided about Strange the Dreamer, just reading its summary made me feel like I could definitely enjoy it as I’m a fan of Dreamfall Chapters. I can see some similarities in the subjects they deal with. I am just not sure if it turns out to be some kind of a love story which would completely put me off.

I can totally understand what you mean about historical fiction. It’s a huge undertaking even if one may like the genre. We seem to have different reading habits though as I prefer to read for longer hours. If I am seriously immersed in a book I want to consume it as soon as possible, otherwise I will not be able to sleep :) Each unread chapter feels like a knife constantly poking me in the skin.

I especially prefer to avoid medieval themes because the way the women are portrayed really annoy the hell out of me. I live in an extremely underdeveloped country that still to this day holds similar thoughts as to what our roles should be and where we fall in line within the society. Therefore I simply don’t want to subject myself to it when in fact I wanna escape from it. I was quite happy with Pillars of the Earth in that regard. There were some very hard to read chapters for me personally, but despite all the endless injustice and horrific treatment they suffer through, they rise above and beyond. It was even inspirational.

I would like to give a really small example. I will put it in spoiler tags even though it isn’t a big spoiler by any means but it’s still up to you whether you want to read it or not :) It’s just one of my favourite examples when it comes to Ellen. Tom and Ellen are not married but they live together. So Prior Philip wants Ellen to leave the cathedral as fornication is a sin and wants Tom to break her the news. They don’t already want women near the cathedral so it feels like a blessing in disguise when they find out about the fornication. When Tom tells Ellen that, she completely snaps and says “it takes two to fornicate” and questions why she is the one who has to leave. Then her anger mounting up even more she picks up a bible and pees on it in front of a bunch of monks while yelling stuff like; “I CURSE PHILIP, I CURSE YOUR BIBLE, I CURSE YOU, I CURSE YOUR GOD, I CURSE YOUR CHURCH” so on and on and leaves without looking back. It is a tiny example but the type of frustration she felt is so relatable that it became one of my most favourite chapters to read and her reaction totally made me laugh out loud.

I’m also very glad that I got back into something I truly love after such a long break. And I’m so happy to have been somewhat of a small influence in helping you do the same :) I can’t help but wish that I also enjoyed The Book Thief as much as you did. Just listening to your excitement about it makes me happy too :)

JaffaCaffa

I’m glad, I hope you like both! We Both Die at the End really wasn’t bad at all, I just didn’t fall in love which is what I needed right now. I don’t know a lot about Strange the Dreamer, but I loved her Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy, particularly the first two. The first one does have some insta romance, but it’s explained why as things are revealed (ironically this is a learn-as-you-go book as nobody as a fucking clue what’s going on lol) and gets more in-depth/ fantasy-ish as it goes on, plus there’s a fantastic female friendship dynamic!! The fact that the romantic relationships didn’t impede on the other relationships is a HUGE plus for me. I’m not a fan of romance in general either, but Laini’s writing is so beautiful (though not for everyone, it’s very whimsical and poetic I guess, beautiful but also doesn’t take away from the story) and has a lot more to it than most I’ve read. Friendship, family, war, magic and a lot of feel-good sassy humour mixed with serious moments, felt all the emotions. Fingers crossed Strange the Dreamer is just as good. :D

I love to read for long periods of time but sadly my health doesn’t always allow it. Audiobooks make it so I can read a lot longer though while relaxing in bed, which I love. :) (Just need a fantastic narrator.) All the Light We Cannot See in particular though is full of descriptive imagery, beautiful prose and quite slow-paced, so I guess despite me loving it I had more to take in than an average book I normally read. Apparently I’m just a slow historical reader. :P I’m completely with you though, where the best books keep you up and can’t stop reading. If I’m really loving it I can happily read the whole day without realising!

And I understand what you mean with wanting to escape. I’m the same when I read LGBTQ+ books as well. I don’t mind when they talk about discrimination, but it sucks seeing the same shit in every book without any happiness or shedding a positive light. Sometimes I just wanna laugh with them and have fun!! I read to escape and feel good and learn/relate, but not repeatedly get battered down harder. Sometimes I think authors do it really well in fantasy where there are strong women and it’s obvious that they face a lot of shit, but they (and other characters) call them out on it/overcome it and are complex characters, period. I think it’s a fine balance of the characters getting past the injustices vs. some authors adding it in just to say “well that’s how it was, so we’ll add it in while also making all the strong characters men & not add anything substantial to it at all”. But sometimes you just don’t wanna hear it regardless. It sucks that there’s still these problems in life, but it’s cool to see literature speak out about it and make interesting characters from all walks of life. Reading gives me more faith in humanity. I just read that snippet and I am tearing up, that was so fucking funny hahaha thanks for sharing. Yes I am definitely interested now. :’)

Thanks a lot for the extra explanations about the books. I am stockpiling the books I want right now, I have about 8 or so books that I purchased waiting to be shipped and 4 books waiting to be read on my shelf. Majority of them are around 900-1000 pages long so it’ll be a while before I try those books. I definitely will though, especially All the Light We Cannot See sounded very interesting to me. One of the books I purchased is called Eye of the Needle which is the first official bestseller from Ken Follett that got him critically acclaimed for the first time from what I read about it (Pillars of the Earth wasn’t liked by critics). Check it out one day. Maybe it is something you might be interested in :)

I’m very sorry to hear about your health issues but I’m glad audiobooks can help you in that regard. I also feel a lot of cramps especially on my left thumb which I use it to hold the cover or the left pages to stop them from closing the book. All that extra weight particularly after reading for a long time can really start hurting my left hand and thumb. I tried to look for a book stand but I already had suspicions which were later confirmed by the user reviews; that it is very difficult to turn the pages. I don’t know which compromise I should go for.

but it sucks seeing the same shit in every book without any happiness or shedding a positive light. I read to escape and feel good and learn/relate, but not repeatedly get battered down harder.

That whole paragraph is so beautifully written by you. We already know the negative, hell we even live in it. My leisure time activities are meant to be an escape from real life so I don’t wanna get a taste of it in my hobbies too. So I want to take refuge in something that can inspire me or put a smile on my face which can be a very hard task honestly.

I am so glad that part made you laugh :) She quickly became my most favourite character after that chapter. That’s why I was upset to see her in the game portrayed to be not as awesome as she is in the novel :(

JaffaCaffa

Yes reading is just as “bad” as gaming, so many wonderful books to read so little time. :D Enjoy!

Sorry about your fingers. :/ I get pain and weakness in my hands as well that reading definitely escalates with so much weight, especially with those massive books. I used a book stand many many years ago and it was more of a pain with the pages getting stuck and worrying about them ripping (which they did occasionally slightly). I know a few people who love e-books because they have arthritis in their hands, though I understand not everyone loves ‘em (myself included). Maybe one more propped up and underneath like this or this would be better? It’s 2018, there must be a decent stand somewhere. Mine had metal pieces without any softening grip so it’d put a lot of pressure on the pages, where something like these look like they’d be easier to move? Good luck finding one that isn’t too bad (and lemme know if you ever find one you love please?)!

Forsaken

I have never used a book stand in my life. I’m very interested in trying out one of them but they are not a priority on my shopping list right now. The models you sent me seem to be nice ones but they are very expensive. If I ever run into a book stand I am satisfied with, I will definitely let you know ;)

Licena

I really like how your post looks. The screenshots are really nice, easy accessible and doesn’t take up much space. I should also go back to book reading, the computer is just too tempting.

Forsaken

Thank you so much, you are very kind. I’m glad my updates won’t take up much space anymore as they usually covered almost half of the feed before.

EvilBlackSheep

It’s nice to read one of your updates again, I’m always excited when you decide to ‘come back’ and one of your post show up in the feed!

First, congrats on the progress, and second congrats for going back to reading, i’m glad i brought you back to goodreads. I’ve taken a bit of a break in reading this month but i’m gonna get back into it again now that the weather is so nice. You’re talking about The Terror tv show, do you recommend it? I haven’t had time to check it out yet but it seemed good.

Also, your review of The Pillars of Earth make me both wanna read the book and play the game! It sounds really interesting even if usually historical fiction is not really my thing.

Thanks for the motion sickness warning on hidden paws by the way. A friend gave it to me for my bday and i was about to start playing it, I’ll make sure to take breaks frequently.

Have fun with the Fallout DLCs, Far Harbor and Nuka world are the most worth it in my humble opinion ;)

Forsaken

Likewise! My mood always lightens up when I see one of your updates ^^ Again thanks for all of that :)

Yes I was talking about The Terror TV show on AMC. I personally really enjoyed it and I can easily consider it to be one of my top 5 drama shows of all time. I purchased its book just today and I can’t wait to get my hands on it.

Historical fiction really isn’t my thing either so I was quite surprised to have enjoyed it and there is some serious strong representation of powerful women despite all the horrific conditions and experiences they have to go through. It can definitely be inspirational and it’s one of the chief reasons as to why I liked it.

I was so upset about Hidden Paws inducing motion sickness because the game is absolutely adorable. Though you never know, maybe it won’t even affect you! :) Belated happy birthday by the way :P

I really am not looking forward to Fallout to be honest. I didn’t even like the game but I’m just going through the motions right now. Because I’m Lenor so I have to purchase DLCs I don’t even want for games I don’t even like in order to get 100%.

IcyGlare

If you didn’t really care about the story in the base game, you probably won’t hate Nuka World too much (except for the grindy cheevos part).

Forsaken

I really didn’t care about the story in the base game at all. I did hear positive reviews about Nuka World but still… This whole thing feels like I’m doing it just cause I feel like I have to, not because I want to. Therefore there is this massive prejudice build-up. I totally blame myself for that of course. I can’t wait to be done with it but I can’t even bring myself to run the game just yet.

IcyGlare

If it’s any consolation, you might find some enjoyment in Far Harbor. I thought it was a bit of an improvement over the base game. And as a fellow screenshot addict, you might enjoy taking screenies there.

Forsaken

And as a fellow screenshot addict, you might enjoy taking screenies there.

Now that’s something to look forward to :)

EvilBlackSheep

Thank you <3

I’ll let you know how it goes when I play Hidden Paws, but i’ll be careful thanks to your warning. I’m pretty prone to motion sickness in games and end up with a headache.

Good luck with Fallout then, I hope you get all the cheevos the fastest you can so you don’t have to suffer too much.

Forsaken

Good luck with Hidden Paws, I’ll be looking forward to your review. I hope the same about Fallout too.

EvilBlackSheep

Sadly, you were right about the motion sickness… But the game is great. Will post a review in this month’s report probably because i think i’m about midway in

Forsaken

Oh no, not you too :( I’m so sorry to hear that.

GiseIIe

I have only seen the tv mini series for pillars of the earth, but I am much interested in the game too!

Forsaken

Oh I am definitely gonna watch that next, I’ll most likely start watching it tomorrow actually. Did you like it?

GiseIIe

Yes, but it’s been sooo long since it came out. There’s also a mini series for the spiritual sequel (world without end) but I couldn’t manage to finish that one.

Forsaken

Yes I believe it was released in 2010. The cast sounds amazing though. Just Ian McShane and Donald Sutherland are more than enough to impress me. I also saw that there is a mini series for World Without End but I won’t watch that until I read the book. I hope it won’t be boring.

Lilith

Love your formatting, post looks relatively short and contains 100 times more information <3 This post is like a whole site.
Understand your reasoning behind this too well.

Forsaken

This post is like a whole site.

This really cracked me up. Thanks a lot for your humorous reply :)

The post felt like writing a thesis, with my default font size (11) it takes up 54 pages on a Word document :P

Lucky Thirteen

My reaction to your MGS review:

MGS V can be an extremely satisfying experience for those like me who prefer pacifist and ghost playstyles.

Oooh!

nothing can even come close to the high points you get as long as you are lightning fast.

Oh…

Shame they tainted a perfectly good stealth game with stupid time-related stuff. The non-lethal takedowns being timed and then alerting everyone sounds awful to me as well, by the way :/ But I’ve only ever played the first MGS, so what do I know. I’m kinda wondering if I should the other MGS games as well, and if so, which ones :)

Nice to read about Little Nightmares and The Pillars of the Earth, both of those are on my wishlist because they both look pretty good to me. Just keeping an eye on them for now, patiently waiting for some neat discounts :)

Forsaken

Unfortunately I haven’t played any other MGS game except Ground Zeroes. I read from someone that S ranking in Ground Zeroes is not that dependent on time but I didn’t try it myself yet so I can’t confirm. I did finish the game outside of Steam once so I didn’t get a chance to test anything back then.

Timed take-downs and guards alerting enemies are all great stuff in my opinion. They really make the player strategise their approach especially if they will go for non-lethal predator style. I went with ghost + pacifist thus such gameplay elements didn’t apply to me. It only affected me when I got so tired of repetitive side ops that I started rushing them in predator style. I literally had 0 lethal options on me so I kept knocking them out every time they started waking up :D It was actually ridiculously hilarious in a way.

Important PS: You know what games you want to play and enter giveaways accordingly, then play your wins. If you are not one of the strongest pillars of the SG community then I don’t know who else would be. Don’t let some elitist jerk make you think otherwise.

Lucky Thirteen

Wow, your PS left me kind of speechless, thank you for the kind words Lenor! It means a lot, especially because most people on SG are really making me loose what little faith in humanity I might have left.

Forsaken

I really enjoyed SG when I first joined but lately the more I look at it the more I despise it. Reading the entirety of that whitelist recruitment seriously made me wanna go on a killing spree in some game to channel my anger.

Lucky Thirteen

Hah, can’t blame you. I honestly don’t know what I was thinking when I opened that thread, I usually avoid those like the plague (and for a good reason, obviously, lol!)

Forsaken

I honestly don’t know what I was thinking when I opened that thread

Haha me neither :P I read those threads just to fill up my blacklist :D I never would even dream of applying even if it’s the last action left in the world. I always fight the urge to mock the hell out of those elitist jerk, egocentric and narcissistic whitelist-recruiters. I’ve never seen a reasonable and just whitelist recruitment on SG forums so far >.<

Lucky Thirteen

That’s probably because the people who want to whitelist someone out of kindness just whitelist them silently. Those recruitment threads are probably mostly meant as sort of a “look how awesome I am!” thing. Ugh, let’s not talk about this any further, wouldn’t want to ruin a perfectly good day haha ;D

SHE IS BACK!

The most important new feature is that “Reviews and Screenshots” tab can now collapse. In this tab, “Click for Review” and “Click for Gallery” buttons, that can be opened and closed at will, have also been added. My reviews and screenshot galleries won’t clutter anyone’s feeds anymore. Victory!

Rubbing it in, huh? If I wasn’t so lazy I’d take cues because collapsible sections are great, but I’m too entrenched in tabs to overhaul the entire thing. For the moment, at least. :D

You’ve been doing some intense reading, I see. All actual physical books? I found out investing in an e-book reader or even app if you have a decent smartphone turned out to be much, much more cost-effective for me in the long run. That’s without even taking into account the fact I can carry entire library worth of stuff in my pocket versus lugging books in a postman bag or something.

Dracula
1984
Fahrenheit 451

What did you think about these classics?

Forsaken

I am only back for this update :) Oh I really wasn’t rubbing it in :P I did feel a sense of accomplishment after I got it working though, after like 30 hours ^^ By the way the codes for those collapsible tabs and buttons were directly stolen from your BLAEO profile, thanks a lot for that :D

Majority of them are physical books. From the books I mentioned only two of them were on Kindle but I really don’t enjoy reading on it. I’ll keep on buying physical books from authors that I really like and go for e-book version for some books that don’t have many pages but are crazy expensive.

Yes, it’s definitely a massive investment. For the past 3 months I spent much more on books than I spent on my Steam library in over a year. Right now I’m stockpiling books though. I have 12 books standing by (majority of them have 900-1000 pages), that’s why I ended up spending so much. For me reading is a much bigger wallet killer than gaming ever was :P

I wasn’t much of a fan of Dracula. 1984 and Fahrenheit 451 on the other hand were absolutely fantastic and they are the type of books that must be read by everyone in the world.

  • When chapters talk about Dracula I was quite interested but I didn’t care about all the rest. Van Helsing’s endless bickering like, “He sleeps sleeps sleeps in his coffin. The night is dark dark dark with the moon shining bright bright bright. Oh my dear Mina how wonderful you are. Oh my beautiful Mina you are so smart. Oh Mina this, Oh Mina that…” Just shut up! His popular culture adaptions are far more interesting.

  • Fahrenheit 451 especially was such a page turner that I finished the book in one day and it made me appreciate my physical books even more. My copy was the 50th anniversary Hardcover edition from Harper Voyager and it felt so good in my hands due to the high quality paper they used for pages and cover. I never wanted to put it down even after I was finished :P I think that would easily be my favourite physical book to hold.

  • 1984 felt extra horrific because we are heading into that direction right now and I live in a country where reporters and journalists can be imprisoned for reporting the truth or even university students can be charged with defamation by the president himself simply because they criticised the government on their social media accounts. So we already have some form of “thought crime” established. I really think that 1984 will become a true reality for some countries in the very near future.

Lorna

A fantastic update. This is very pleasing to look at and I approve of the colours.
You’ve got such a tiny backlog now… I’m kinda envious… but seriously, that’s a great achievement. Congrats! :D

Forsaken

I was not expecting this reply as the post must be somewhere on the 4th or 5th page in BLAEO feed by now :P Thanks a lot for the lovely words :)

Yes the backlog is very tiny but I don’t feel like playing anything at the moment. So it might as well be me dying to play games but having like 2000 unplayed ones :(
