#18 | Mid-September Update

2 months since my previous post and I finally decide to stop being a lazy ass. It takes so much effort to write these posts. :/

I have a confession to make. I haven’t been tackling my backlog diligently enough… There are bouts when I play 5 hours a day, and then afterwards I don’t log in for a week. Despite that, I managed to complete some games in the past weeks, though they’re mostly short ones. (But hey, any progress is better than no progress, right?)

Completed Games

fault - milestone one was quite an unexpected experience for me, but a really good one. The only other visual novel I’ve played so far is Hatoful Boyfriend, and I didn’t know what a kinetic novel was, so I went in expecting a lot of choices. Man, I was so wrong. There is only one “choice” you make in the entire game, and it only changes the next few lines of dialogues. So, yeah, the story is linear, and there is no replayability (unless you can read Japanese - then you can play in its original language). Despite that, I actually really like this. It’s the first in a series (trilogy?) of kinetic novels, but a major portion of the game is pretty much self-contained. The overarching storyline isn’t featured much, except in the beginning and end, and it ends on a cliffhanger - which makes me want to play the next one so badly. D: The story starts out pretty serious, is kinda light-hearted in the middle and gets rather dark (and sad) at the end. The soundtrack is pretty ok - the track on the menu screen is wonderful, but some of the others aren’t as memorable.

One issue I have with the game is that the beginning is too content heavy - it serves as an introduction to the world the characters are living in, but I felt that it could have been done gradually throughout the game, instead of throwing out all the information right at the start.

Completed the Time Mysteries trilogy, but not in time for the August theme. Where is my TARDIS when I need it? :P I can’t help thinking that Artifex Mundi could do better than this, when playing these HOGs. The first game is excused, since it was released a long time ago, so it can’t be compared to the more recent Artifex Mundi offerings. But the 2 sequels had me feeling like I was just finding a key here, to open that door to that room, in which I’d find another key to open this chest in another room, and so on. Some of the hidden object scenes were also way too easy as the objects I had to find didn’t fit that well into the background. The time-travel device was interesting for a while, then it got tedious to keep switching between the different time periods. The Enigmatis series was much better. Something in common about these HOGs though: they should do away with voice acting as they’re all terrible.

Side note: I still think the Mystery Case Files series are the best HOGs I’ve played. Only a few of them are on Steam though.

I may or may not be slightly addicted to Hexcells. Just slightly. Finished all three games over a long weekend, and it’s now my new favourite puzzle game. :D It’s kinda like a cross between nonograms and minesweeper, and I love how every puzzle can always be solved logically - no guesswork involved. That was one thing I hated about minesweeper - I’d have two cells and one bomb left, but no way to know which is the bomb. The difficulty of the puzzles increase gradually, and across the games too, so Hexcells is kinda like the “tutorial” for the next two games. Which is also why my playtime increases by so much (though for Hexcells Infinite I was playing while doing work, so actual playtime is probably 4-5 hours less). Everyone should play this, especially puzzle lovers!

In Progress

I only found out about Renowned Explorers: International Society when I got it in that Humble Monthly ages ago, and have wanted to start since then but didn’t. Several posts here gave me the extra push to start playing, and I’m very glad I did. Super fun turn-based strategy game, and I expect to be putting a lot more hours into it.

I don’t think I’ll be participating in this month’s theme, as the games are all too long to fit into my limited playtime, which is only going to get less as more schoolwork pile up. :/

Arbiter Libera

I’ve been eying to play Renowned Explorers, but then DLC got released and now it feels like I’d be missing out without that. Eh.

EvilBlackSheep

The DLC is great but you can totally play the game without it, and enjoy it later if you decide to get it at some point!

EvilBlackSheep

I love Renowned Explorers, it such a fun game!! (And with a great replayability). Glad to see you updating again :)

lmxn

I’m always lurking, never updating (: Does the DLC just add additional locations to explore or is there more to it?

EvilBlackSheep

The DLC adds a few locations but also a new mechanic of campfire events, that you can use at some point during your expedition. Those events are collected by opening “packets” of cards when you finish an expedition and they give random bonuses. It’s a pretty cool mechanic, and overall I’d say the DLC is really nice but you can also play without no problem. I’d recommend waiting for a promo on the DLC, even if it’s ok for full price.

lmxn

I see, hopefully it gets a good discount during the Winter sale then ^^ I won’t be completing the base game any time soon I expect.

Garcias

Hey, any progress is still progress!

Renowned Exploreres does look cool, I have heard amazing things about it. I’ll be waiting for your “review” of the game!

TopDeer

I think Fault series is one of the best (or, maybe it’s better to say “one of the few good”) VNs on Steam - to me it was a great reading, even without a gameplay choices.
It’s good to see you didn’t give up on gaming =D

lmxn

Yeah, all I’ve heard are praises for it. What are some others that you’d recommend?

I don’t think I’d ever give up… Take a break sometimes maybe (:

TopDeer

Did you know that people are tagging Telltale’s games as visual novels? =D
From the dozen I’ve already played the best were Danganronpa and Higurashi (this one is also kinetic).
The ones I’m most eager to try are Steins;Gate and VA-11 Hall-A.

lmxn

O_O But hey, another excuse to play Telltale games sounds great :P
Oh I’ve got Danganronpa on my wishlist but I didn’t know it was a VN. Huh, I seem to remember Higurashi being tagged as “horror” which was why I’ve avoided it…

ShandyAndy

Renowned explorers was on my wish list when HMB came out and was pretty pleased to get it but as it’s been sitting on my backlog possibles every since. I think I might fire it up and check it really is a game I want to play ;) Looking forward to playing the Hexcells myself. Played the first for a short time a few weeks ago just to check I liked it and it took quite a bit of self control to stop playing it and put it on my backlog. I think it may well be the next puzzle game I play once I am done with Blockwick 2 :)

lmxn

I really, really love Hexcells. Blockwick 2 looks fun too. ^^ I’ve a thing for these minimalistic puzzle games…

Ghostie

You’re alive!? But seriously, I did wonder where you had gone. :)
I kind of regret not getting the bundle that had Fault Milestone now, it sounds like it’s well worth it but seeing as it’s a three parts, probably better to wait?
Really got to get myself in gear and try out Renowned Explorers though. No excuse there.

lmxn

-goes back into hiding-

IMO it’s always better to wait if you’re not going to play immediately, as the prices are only going to get lower.

Ghostie

Of course. :)

Animepocalypse

I played a bit of renowned explorers as well :) I find it great but I am waiting for bigger discountt on the DLC :D

lmxn

Waiting as well now (: Winter sale maybe?

Animepocalypse

I hope so :) if not im pretty patient as i have been having a blast with my backlog. Plus I never have trouble finidng things to buy on winter and summer sales. Most go to giveaways, but sometimes get one or two for myself heh. The discounts can be to alluring :D

MikuIT

I may or may not be slightly addicted to Hexcells. Just slightly.

There’re no addicts here…

…only casual gamers.

lmxn

O_O

nellyneko

I started Hexcells this week, though I guess I’m too impatient for “no guessing” most of the time. And I still have problems with left/right-clicks, since it’s the opposite of what I’m used to from Minesweeper, so I make mistakes all the time even when I wanted to do something different. (Also, I usually do it while watching tv/youtube). As for Nonograms, finished Paint it Back last week, was fun as well (would have liked some bigger puzzles in there, but oh well :) )
… maybe I should write another update one of these days …

lmxn

Oh yeah the clicking takes some getting used to. I don’t think I can play minesweeper anymore… But this is better anyway (: I’m waiting for a good sale for Paint It Back, nonograms are fun ^^

Yes you should! All you “original” members (i.e. you, revil, mandrill) haven’t posted in forever.
