Hello BLAEO!

Hi everyone! I just set up my account here a couple weeks ago and don’t really have any game progress to report yet, but I’m way too excited to play around with these beautiful post generator tools and make some pretty lists :-D So I figured I’d make my first post about the games that I’d like to play in 2023. I don’t really think I’ll end up getting through all of them, and I won’t feel bad about it if I don’t. I’ve learned that my interests and tastes change frequently, new games will get added to my library, and sometimes my drive to finish a game will peter out quickly even if I’m enjoying myself. But as long as I’m having fun, I’m happy!

I love talking about indie games and giving recommendations based on a person’s tastes or genre interests, so please leave a comment if there’s any game-things you’d like to chat about! I think the coolest aspect of BLAEO vs. other backlog tracking sites is that there’s a ready-made community here and we can all just share whatever thoughts we have and join in the cozy discussion environment at our leisure :-)
I’ll figure it out later
With all that said, I made a list of Games I’d Like to Play in 2023, and here they are (I kinda tried to sort them vaguely by genre):

maybe
From this list, I’m currently playing through Return of the Obra Dinn with my dad, but it’s slow going because he only comes over 1-2 times a week. It’s truly an amazing game, though. We’ve solved 15/60 fates so far! I hope to potentially finish it in February. I’ve got a few games going on other platforms as well, so I’m not sure yet which one of these I’ll focus on next. Might try to knock out some of the shorter ones first.

Okay, now maybe I should stop making lists of games and get around to actually playing them! Thanks for reading!

Jekofob

Welcome :) I am also pretty new

You do have some good games on the list. I loved Obra Dinn and it’s so nice that you can play it with your dad :)

Danganronpa is another great game (I did it for ps4) and I do want to try Bear’s Restauant once :)

franplants

Thanks, and welcome to you too!

We’re having a great time with Obra Dinn. My dad loves nautical stuff (he likes to brag that he’s “one of the few people who actually finished reading Moby Dick,” lol), so as soon as I showed him the setting of the game, he was hooked.

I’m really excited to play Danganronpa, as investigative/mystery games are pretty much my favorite genre (as you can see, I have quite a few on the list!)

Once you do get to try Bear’s Restaurant, definitely also check out Fishing Paradiso by the same dev!

Jekofob

Yes same here. I’ve been waiting for the right time to play DR2 (the first I bought actually so I was a bit confused when trying it out)

What are some of the best mystery games you have tried? I love them myself :)

oh and may I ask how did you insert that flower photo in your profile? :)

franplants

Heya! So sorry for the slow response. I inserted the image into my profile using the html img tag, like this:

< img src=”url address of the image” alt=”text that will display if the image doesn’t show up” title=”text that will show when you hover over the image” >

(You have to remove the spaces I put before and after the <> braces in order for it to work.)
I just searched for an open-source/free-use image first so I wouldn’t be accidentally breaking any copyright laws XD

As for other mystery games, here’s some that I’ve played (at least a little bit) and enjoyed:

  • Paradise Killer (probably my #1 favorite)
  • Lacuna: A Sci-Fi Noir Adventure
  • Detective Grimoire, Tangle Tower
  • The Frog Detective games
  • Murder By Numbers
  • Chicken Police
  • Song of Farca
  • Chinatown Detective Agency
  • Darkside Detective
  • Unavowed
  • BROK the InvestiGator
  • Pixel Noir
  • The Phoenix Wright games

There’s probably more I’m forgetting about, but I think that’s a good start :-)

Hello franplants and welcome to BLAEO! :D

You have some nice games in the list, hope you will share your opinion on them with us. ;)
Have fun and enjoy your backlog fight. :D

franplants

Thanks so much! I definitely look forward to sharing my reviews :-)

mordsmiez

Welcome to BLAEO! :)

franplants

Thank you! Glad to be here :-)

Trent

Hi, Franplants! And welcome to BLAEO.

Looks like you have your gaming year all ready to go. :) As you may know, BLAEO also has monthly themes that can serve to give you a nudge in your gaming decisions if you like.

I don’t know many of the games on your list and haven’t played any, but I did play the first Fault game (meh), Lost Nova looks cute, and of course Disco Elysium looks good too.

As a Dad, I love hearing that you’re playing games with yours. My kids are only 11, but I hope to keep playing games with them for a long time! Although sadly these days they’d rather play Roblox than Steam games with Dad. :(

franplants

Thanks so much! Yeah, with all these games it’s more like the next 3 gaming years ready to go, lol. I definitely plan to check out the themes!

I liked the first Fault game alright, the writing is nothing to…write home about (lol), but I found the setting to be very interesting. Although it was a bit jarring in the end to realize basically the whole story was about Rune and not actually the main characters. I played through the first one pretty quickly and was going to start the second one right away, but then I got distracted with other games XD so now it’s on my to-play list.

Lost Nova is EXTREMELY adorable - might be one that would be fun for your kids, too!

And don’t feel too bad, they’ll come back around eventually, whether it’s in 2 years or 20. My dad and I are 73/33 respectively and this last year is the first time we’ve actively played games together (when I was a kid I used to watch him play sometimes). It all started when I got Myst from a bundle. He played it back when I was in grade school, so I was just like, “Hey Dad, wanna play Myst with me?” We finished the game and it was downhill from there!

Trent

I think with Fault the issue was that I’m just not into anime, sadly. At least they were telling a story, I can’t fault it for that (Dad joke pun intended).
Awwww, I love that your Dad is 73 and still playing games with his beloved daughter. My kids and I are also 40 years apart. I will hope to play games with her when I’m 73. And yes, Myst is a great game. I remember playing it in 1995, when you were in grade school! <3

franplants

Ok, I’m finally going back through my list of comments and replying to the ones I neglected, so pretend a month hasn’t passed since you wrote that lol!

Funny enough, I remember trying Myst when I was in grade school and being like “what the heck, I have no idea what’s going on.” So I left it to just watching my dad play. That’s one nice thing about being an adult, I suppose. Can actually solve puzzles now XD

Trent

No worries, better late than never! Thanks for the response.

Mitsukuni

Welcome. :)

Really nice games are there.

franplants

Thank you! Sometimes I just like to sit back and admire the game art, lol

Mitsukuni

Well, some games are real artworks and it seems you have a lot of them. Admiring them is one way to enjoy. :)

Amitte

Welcome to BLAEO! You’ve got some really cool games in your backlog :D

franplants

Thank you! I’m excited to see what everyone gets to play this year :-)

EvilBlackSheep

First of all, welcome to BLAEO :3

Now, that list of games for 2023 \o/ It is really an amazing selection! I’ve loved most of the ones I’ve played in there, and am also looking forward of playing some of those other ones in 2023! Will be glad to read what you think about them as you make progress. Good luck with your backlog fight!

franplants

Thanks!! I’m looking forward to seeing what games you get to play as well :D

EvilBlackSheep

Sent you a friend request on steam just because I like spying people’s progress on my activity feed but don’t feel pressured to accept ;)

franplants

Haha I accepted it! I love peeping the activity feed as well >_>

Arbiter Libera

Welcome aboard. That looks like a varied offering you have there. Speaking of which, do you straight up buy individual games or are you more of a bundles person?

P.S.
I caught your secret lines. :D I’m not sure how your post looks raw before you post it on BLAEO, but you can format individual paragraphs if you want to for convenience or text alignment, etc. Here’s a handy link if you’d like to know more.

franplants

Congrats, you win the secret lines prize! :D Thanks for the tip! I’m definitely bookmarking that page for future reference. I did actually figure out to use <p> instead of «span» since my last post. When I originally found the formatting code I was looking for, I didn’t understand what “span” meant, but now I do. I’ve learned a lot in the last few days lol

I’m a HUGE bundle buyer, although I do also buy individual games semi-frequently: smaller indie games that I want to play right away, or want to support the devs, are the usual candidates. Esp games that I doubt would ever get bundled. I also buy a majority of my individual games off-Steam when they have better prices. For games that I’m not dying to play and have a publisher that frequently bundles, being patient usually pays off. But bundles are the main culprit for how my library got so big lmao

I will say, of the games above, literally 1 is from a bundle (and 1 from a game trade), so I guess that says something about how often I actually play the games that I get from bundles T_T

Arbiter Libera

For sure. I remember the crazy bundle heydays when you could fill your library for couple of dollars. Nowadays it’s mainly Humble Choice getting me to try out games I never would otherwise, though.

franplants

Yeah I’m a big Humble Choicer, I usually get that every month. Non-Choice HB bundles that I want have been fewer and far…betweener? (lol) lately, but that just makes it all the more exciting when one comes out that’s an insta-buy for me. And sometimes I use the Steam group for bundle splits, which is a decent bit of work but always nice to make some new Steam friends in the process :-)

I get bundles fairly often from Fanatical too (though I probably have so many games from there that I’ll literally never play), and once in a blue moon I’ll grab one from IndieGala.

I do enjoy the collection aspect of it even though I might never get a chance to play many of these games. I’ve also started hiding any games that I don’t feel excited to play right now, which has helped make my library a little more manageable and “curated.” I like knowing that I can always just go back and un-hide a game if I do get the whim to play it.
