I’m curious - what do you guys do when you have a SteamGifts win that you’re just… really not enjoying. I already have 4 that I’ve abandoned, and I feel very bad about it. And now I’m on a fifth that I just… ugh. I feel like I should go back and try to plow threw all of them. All of their premises looked cool when I entered the giveaways, but… in gameplay, less-so.

tsupertsundere

Fuck ‘em! You did your due diligence where you gave it the ol’ college try - if you’re not enjoying it, set it aside.

A lot of people on SG are like DUMB STRICT about win conduct, etc. and I think that’s a losin’ game. They’re not the ones having to sit through unfun games - you are. Set it aside and play something else. Do it for yourself.

RileyHisbert

That’s how I was feeling, too, to be honest. I feel like so long as I put an effort into a game, I shouldn’t have to feel bad about it, right?

adil

If the game is bad or I’m just not enjoying it then I stop playing it. Simple as that xD

I always give it a try and sometimes it’s just not the right time so I don’t feel like playing it. Then I get back to it later and it works. But if it’s a bad game, as long as I tried the game I feel I did my part.
It’s best to avoid feeling obligated to beat all games just because it’s a gift. Most games given are cheap bundles anyway that people don’t want to play (at least that’s a good part of the games I gave away haha) so it’s okay to not beat them all.

RileyHisbert

Yeah, I never drop a game after just one play. Even if I set it to ‘abandoned’, I try and pick it back up again in the future.
Thanks for the reassurance!

Supernormu

Agree with the previous comments. Life’s too short to be persisting with games you’re not enjoying. The fact that you’ve given it a decent go means you can abandon the game without feeling guilty.

RileyHisbert

Thank you!

RileyHisbert

Thank you!

stef

I forced myself to play them and it wasn’t fun. If you entered because you thought you’d like it and then you tried it, then you’ve done your best! Playing games is supposed to be fun and you can’t know if you like a game until you play it. Hope you have better luck with your other wins!

RileyHisbert

Thank you!

Bangledeschler

I definitely force my way through them, not without dropping them a few times. Pid for example seemed like it would fun, next thing I knew couldn’t wait for it to be over. Definitely don’t feel bad or anything for it. You won it, ya tried it, you get to decide what you do with it in the end guilt free. Hope you find peace with your decisions after all this. Good luck and be well! ^_^

RileyHisbert

See, if it’s a short enough game, I’ll plow through it. Some games are just so long that I can’t justify plowing through it xD

Aside from agreeing with the previous comments… I just gotta say, it’s a shame I Have No Mouth didn’t satisfy you. It’s hard, I can agree with that, but also a marvelous story.

RileyHisbert

Gotta say, I’m sad I didn’t like it more, too. I loved the original story, which I why I entered. To be honest, I probably will try and pick it up again sometime, for me the biggest issue was one misclick means I have to restart hours of gameplay because I died. But your love of it is making me want to try again >3>

Amitte

Ooo, I’ve yet to read the original story myself. As for the gameplay… I know I would probably lose my mind too, but all we can do is call it “Sierra logic” and try again :) Using walkthroughs is an option too, but it spoils the fun… unless you’ve been trying for half the day, that much time really isn’t worth it.

Cece09

Well you got loads of support not to continue and I also agree with that. You can’t be expected to play everything fully unless you’re in playing matters then yeah you need to suck it up. However away from that just drop games when you want. I don’t know the stats but I know plenty of people who win so many games and not even 25% has been played. The fact you have tried the games is good enough and I bet the creators would be happy just to find out someone did actually try the game out instead of idling it for cards or a +1 bonus

Lucky Thirteen

I believe that people should only enter giveaways for games they’re interested in, but sometimes it just happens that a game that looked great turns out to be utterly disappointing (and/or stupidly difficult). In that case, you can either put up with it or abandon it - neither of these options are wrong, in my opinion :)
Like some other commenters pointed out, you’ve won the game, it belongs to you now and so you can freely decide what to do with it. Don’t feel bad ;)

As for me, personally, I can’t help but feel a bit bad when I leave a game unfinished for whatever reason (be it a gitf, a SG win or something I bought for myself). Finishing games is just so satisfying!

RileyHisbert

Stupidly difficult it definetly an issue I’ve had xD One of my abandoned games I spent ages trying to get past the tutorial level and had to call it.
Definitely is! I really, really hate abandoning games. Honestly, I don’t think any of my abandoned games are 100% abandoned - I’d be willing to try them in the future. But I mark them off so that I can sort of see how I felt about it when I did try it.

Lucky Thirteen

One of my abandoned games I spent ages trying to get past the tutorial level

Ouch, was it that bad? O.o Which game was it, out of curiousity?

RileyHisbert

DustForce has shown me I suck at platforming lol. It was more of I couldn’t do it in th etime it wanted

Lucky Thirteen

Ah, DustForce… That’s useful to know. I got that game as a freebie from somewhere, now I know there’s no point in even installing it. I like nice and easy games, you probably spared me a lot of frustration. Thanks :D

And by the way, I also played Ninjahtic, got stuck pretty early on >_< I can see why you abandoned that game.

Fallen Kal

I’ve never been in a situation where a game is so bad I couldn’t enjoy it at all. Most games have at least some redeeming qualities which make them mediocre at worst. The only example I can really think of would be “System Shock” which was far more disappointing than I could have imagined, but still I plowed through and by doing so found some fun in it towards the end. If it happens on a regular basis maybe do more research in the games you’re entering for, Steam reviews actually give me a good indication what the game is like, just make sure to read both positive and negative ones (negative ones usually provide the most useful info). But I’m very selective about the games I enter, so do whatever feels right for you; but maybe also don’t give up on games that aren’t fun straight away, sometimes the fun comes later.

RileyHisbert

They’re all games from when I first joined SG, now I really only enter for WL’d games because I learned my lesson.

Fallen Kal

I looked at the games in question and can’t say that I blame you, except for “I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream” which is a pretty good game, why don’t you like it? It’s a common occurrence on Steamgifts, if you really not enjoying them drop them I’d say, at least you gave them a fair chance.

RileyHisbert

I got really irritated at the whole ‘pick one wrong move and you have to start over’ part. But I do want to like it, I really do. I’ll probably pick it back up.

Lucky Thirteen

Haha, I like that change of attitude. From “maybe you need to select more carefully which giveaways you enter” to “well, can’t really blame you” :D
(I’m not trying to insult you or make fun of you, I genuinely like it.)

Fallen Kal

No offense taken. I still think both opinions are valid if you don’t like the games you’re winning, be more selective; but the games he did end up abandoning look pretty horrible and I certainly wouldn’t add them to my library even if I got them for free. Except for “I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream”, which is a pretty good game, though it’s not the easiest PnC game. It’s certainly not my place to tell anyone what to do however.

Lucky Thirteen

Yeah, I also think that both your points are valid. Can’t say anything about “I Have No Mouth…” though, as I never played that game :)

Formidolosus

Yeah it does suck when that happens. I won a game which was early access that then got abandoned. And it was from a special birthday event so I felt bad. I played it for a bit at first, with the intention of going back later after it was finished, but now it’s abandoned. So yeah I guess it’s just one of those things.

Lucky Thirteen

I won a game which was early access that then got abandoned

That really does suck :/ One of the games I’ve won on SG simply didn’t work - it was playable for about 5 minutes because a crucial NPC was missing. Still is, despite many complaints, the developer never fixed it (as far as I’m aware). And yes, the game can still be bought on Steam, which is incredibly infuriating!

Formidolosus

Yeah it does suck. At least in this case they removed the store page. I guess it’s just a risk nowadays, when so many Early Access games even get bundled before release, that a lot of giveaways will end up being for games that just don’t work and never will. I am of the opinion that valve should only allow EA for trusted publishers or for games that are feature complete and EA is just the final stage of testing and user feedback. It just seems too tempting for noob developers to try and finance their game through EA while still learning how to actually build a game.

Lucky Thirteen

Yes, exactly. EA has become a way for inexperienced devs and lazy scammers to get money without ever actually delivering a finished, functioning product. It doesn’t help that many people will give a positive review to a bad EA game because “it has potential”.
That said, I played many EA titles that were genuinely good and succesfully left early acess after some time, but… I guess for every positive experience, there are 10 negative ones.

Trav

You gave the games a shot and they didn’t work out for whatever reason. The fact that you at least tried it is all anyone could ask for, so I wouldn’t worry about it needlessly. It’s not war, nobody’s dying, it’s just video games.

I discovered that the obligation to play a game tends to turn it unfun for me pretty quickly. I like to be able to play games on my own time without pressure. That’s why my SG has been deleted, and why I wish more of my friend-sent gifts were DLCs for games I’m already playing instead of more new games. DLCs are seriously underrated as gifts!

RileyHisbert

Yeah, I definetly see that. Probably smart. ANd DLCs are great gifts!

RikkiUW

I’m in agreement with everyone else here - if you’re not enjoying it, drop it. I definitely get feeling guilty though. Personally if it’s shorter I’ll often just finish it, but not for medium/longer ones. In the past I’ve made the mistake of entering things with interesting concepts that I should have known better - VVVVV for example. The gravity thing is a neat idea, but I’m not terribly good at platformers and dislike repeatedly restarting because of dying, which I should have seen coming. Live and learn though; now I try and be much picker with what I enter.

RileyHisbert

Haha, yeah, that was my issue when I joined SG. Now I only enter things on my WL :P

MiniTaurus

It’s okay if you not click with sg win ^^ The purpose for playing games after all is too have fun, not doing a chore ^^
Have fun and keep gaming ^^
