A Year of Backlog Fight in Review

This year’s report, mostly made of a slice of stats and a slice of eye candy of my favourite games I’ve played last year, in no particular order. Actually if I had to only get a Top 3, I would have cut it down to Hades, Spiritfarer and Wintermoor Tactics Club, with a special extra spot for Animal Crossing, the perfect game to play when you can’t actually wander outside. But anyway, all the games in that Top 15 deserve their place. 2020 was a crappy year in general but a great year gaming wise, and I didn’t even have time to play/finish all I would have wanted. Happy New Year to all of you and I wish you a much better 2021, even if it starts as a mess, it has room to grow better.

Despite the progress not looking too spectacular, I'm still ok with it. The second group progress only looks "bad" because I've made some changes to it, split it in two and some games were moved to a separate list in which everything got played. It's just hard to reflect it in the visual stats result, but I'm okay with it. I still plan to try and do better with it in 2021.

More or less the previous year's plans but I'm considering adding some sort of bingo card inspired by this event.

Other than that, one of my massive decision for 2021 was to take a break and stop playing Gems of War for the time being. Not only I was feeling a burnout to play it daily (you know how those free to play with daily tasks go) but also I put a crazy amount of time into it (not reflected in the steam hours count because I mostly played it on the tablet, but I probably passed a thousand hours on it) that took away from the other backlog fight. We'll see how it goes.

Pretending gems of war was your only non-steam addiction :laughingboye:

 b-b-b-but the other one is in my top 15

Kaleith

The top 15 isn’t 15 copies of Hades, smh

EvilBlackSheep

Hades is bestu, but they all deserve a bit of love.

Elvidur

I totally loved GRIS, one of the best games I played last year indeed. Is Hades as good as everyone is saying? I’m tempted to sin and buy it :D. Nice collection you have for 2020, keep the nice work!

EvilBlackSheep

I’d say yes. I am assuming some people might dislike the game because it’s not their thing (for example the genre) but I have to say as a fan of roguelikes, this is the best one I’ve played. I can’t really find it flaws even thinking about it, which is why it made this list even though I haven’t beaten it yet and it’s my GOTY even without being my most played game. It was also the game I gave most as a xmas present this year, so I’m not gonna tell you not to sin, if you have to splurge and buy yourself one game, get Hades. :D

Elvidur

And it seems it reduces my biggest problem with Roguelikes, which is the need to constantly start from scratch. I might buy it after my backlog challenge advances a bit, but cannot justify the spending right now :D. Thanks for the info!

The whole progress and storytelling is made in a way that makes it very satisfying and you feel like you’re learning and getting better. No need to rush on it, just keep an eye for when it gets a sale ;)

Traqie

Very nicely done post! Why is Wintermoor Tactics Club so good tho? :o I feel like I’ve seen nothing but praises for this game here but I barely read or heard about it in other places.

EvilBlackSheep

If you like turned based tactics games (think final fantasy tactics), it IS that good. It’s really well done mechanically while also being super cute and clean visually AND having a nice story. I wasn’t expecting too much of it at the beginning because I hadn’t heard much about it and this being one of my favourite genre, good games in this category are not too many and I’ve been disappointed many times. I feel like it’s the indie ‘hidden’ gem of the year (compared to something like Hades that is also indie gem but got a lot of coverage everywhere). It’s just been a great surprise for me this past year.

Hey EBS, I’m with you in the Hades for 2020 GOTY club !

I knew you had good taste <3
