Rules + Guidelines
- Pick a game that takes at least 20 hours to beat according to HLTB.
- Unfinished games are fine, as long as you have at least 20 hours left in your game to the desired goal (ex. goal: 30 hours, played: 6 hours = yes! BUT goal: 22 hours, played: 3 hours = no!).
- If you don’t own such game, don’t like the one(s) you have or have completed all 20+ h games in your library, you can pick 2 games that together take at least 20 hours to complete (again, not counting already played/idled time).
- Please let me know when you’ve reached or even exceeded your goal by replying to the first comment.
- Idled time counts as played time, even if you have no achievements yet
- HLTB times can be off, it’s fine if you complete your game in under 20 hours (good job!)
- There may be a giveaway at the end of the month ;) (but there are no punishments or extra rewards for reaching/not reaching your goal)
- Never ending games are okay if you haven’t spent a significant amount in them yet and progress can be measured to some extent.
- If no/very few achievements are available or achievements aren’t linked to game progress, please take screenshots when you play and upload them as public to your Steam account (at the very least somewhere in the beginning and the end, to show your progress).
- I’ll add more as the questions roll in ;)

I got a little bit lost in this thread (popular theme!). I am not sure what comment to reply to report my game completion. Hopefully this will work.
I have finished Mafia III (main story, all optional missions and two story DLCs). One of the story DLCs hasn’t been released yet so I will revisit the game when/if I get the final dlc but for now I consider it beaten.
Here are the final numbers (I didn’t idle it, pretty sure “main + extras” estimate only includes main game, not the dlcs so it took me some extra time):

Final update (sorry for spam).
1) Mafia’s final DLC came out a couple of days so I was able to play it. I am officially done with it now. Final numbers:
Hours played: 55 / Achievements: 77/85
2) Tales of Symphonia’s hours count stand at 42 hours now but there is still plenty of stuff left to do in this game. I will continue playing it next month.

Well, that was a close call. When I read the new theme post I was thinking, “yeah. Nier will count :D”
And then I went to HLTB and saw that it is shorter than I thought :D It feels like I am at the very beginning of the game, anyway. I wanted to complete the Main Story and most of the side missions. So according to the numbers I have still at least 24 hours ahead of me. But I guess there are still more than 40 as I am playing it very slowly and the ingame clock says, I played for only 9 hours ;)

Hey nelly, how should we go about updating our comments with info? Should I update the status (achievs) every once in a while or should I wait till I’ve beaten the game and then update it?
Commenting here is fine if progress is slow, but you can just wait until you’re done with either. I won’t update the post every day. Originally I was planning to go through the list myself every now and then, but with so many people participating that’s become impossible (or at least very time consuming).

Added for now, but looks like you only have 14 levels to go for the last achievement - I don’t know the game though, about how long does one level take? (I’m guessing you need more and more XP for each level?)
I honestly don’t know how much it usually takes, since I can’t find precisely how much XP I even have (it only shows up as a sort of progress bar).. It doesn’t feel like it’d actually take at least 20h, now that I think about it :/ But I’m planning to get that achievement anyway, so if it does take less, I’ll come back and choose something else, if that’s okay.
sure - you can choose a shorter game then, for example if you only need 6 hours to get the last achievement, you can pick a 14 hour game to fill up the rest of the challenge time ;)

I really enjoyed this game and I hope you will, too!
I am enjoying it - but it does come with some caveats. The combat is fun, but a little easy (except when it’s too hard!). The storyline is nice, but not exactly enthralling. The characters are lovely, but the conversations do go on a bit too long sometimes and so on. But I’ll definitely be playing it to the end and overall I think it’s a good game so far. Don’t think I’d have the stamina to get any of the later games though.

Thanks nellyneko. I’m not entirely certain what they mean by extras for this game, since there’s an awful lot that can be missed in a single play through, but I’m going to get as much as I can done!
I’m not entirely sure either, maybe different endings + dlcs, but not collecting all the things? (which is usually the grindiest part and can take up several extra hours => Completionist?)
My main aim will be to make sure I complete all the side quests (which are numerous and can be missed - I’ve lost 2-4 hours replaying sections because of that already). And I might well end up getting close to complete anyway.

I didn’t know what to do with them in the table tbh, cause in game you access them separately from the menu, and they have their own achievements that affect total completion stats, still they are not considered part of the main game I think. I’m going to play them, cause I’m planning to go through as much content as possible, but like I mentioned, I’m not sure if I will be able to get 100% achievements.
I will focus on exhausting all the content, and at least for me achievements ≠ content. I am enjoying the game overall, very much even, but trying to 100% certain minigames I’m simply not good at, would just turn whole experience frustrating, and I don’t want that :) Open world games tend to be a mixed bag like that. They cram so much varied stuff in there, that in most cases it’s impossible to be good at everything, even though you enjoy like 90% of the other things ;)
added, and it’s fine if you go over - I picked Main + Extras for myself because Main would be less than 20 hours with my already played time, an Completionist is a lot for 1 month for me - but I’ll try to get 100% anyways.

To be clear…what should the screenshot(s) show? Do you want a screenshot of me at the beginning of the game, or a screen that shows me with only 16 minutes of playtime (which is the case so far)? Or do you only want “progress” screenshots that show me 25%, 50%, etc. through the game?
If there are levels or percentages, sure. You can also use something from the intro, anything in between and the credits if you get that far. And/or you could do it like ninglor, with overlay showing the time
Although I can also see how much time you spent in the game in your recently played list, so it’s not necessary - just random shots at different times should be enough, to pretty much show you’re playing and not idling.
Yes, given that I never started the game before this month, and my recently played list will reflect that, I won’t upload a screenshot for that. But I will upload some screenshots as I go to show progress. I know there’s almost no way I’ll complete the main story this month (I tend to have to double HLTB times given my playstyle), but I’ll concentrate on this game with my non-kid playing time this month and see how it goes. :)

A complete abject failure, I’m afraid. A total of 3.6 hours of non-kid gaming time this month, as you can see. I didn’t get too much farther than this screenshot after I created my character, lol.

Welcome back, and too bad about the achievements - I thought you retroactively get achievements when you start up the game again? I had a few games where I played while online but didn’t get anything, and one or two restarts later I did get everything. Same with games where achievements are added later - at least the measurable ones are applied retroactivel when you start it up again.
Since The Witcher doesn’t have achievements, could you link me to your screenshots for it when you have them? Just a few will do, sometime in the beginning + end, middle if you feel like it. Thanks :)

I already started playing this one yesterday before signing up here, so here are my stats as of now. I picked ‘main story’ as my HLTB target, but I’m planning to play some of the additional content along the way. I’m choosing the same as Top Deer: Tales of Zestiria. I have aready 74 hours into it. But I believe there will be come a significant number of more hours. I should at least be able to beat the game during July and maybe play the DLC too. If I manage to complete it I don’t know. Completion should take something around 140+ hours according to HLTB. Currently I am at 21/56 achievements.

I’m on mission 8 out of 31 and its already taken me 17 hrs…basically just beating the main game (and a few of the side op’s) might take me 80hrs (instead of the 45 on HLTB) and I’m not that sure I can successfully complete it.
I’m going try my best but its looking more and more insurmountable.

After several months of going on hiatus, I think I’m going to participate on this month’s theme. Been wanting to cut through my RPG backlog after playing quite a lot of action-oriented games on Steam. Going to go for Main Stories + Extras for this one as going Completionist on an RPG would potentially take too much time, will see how it goes nevertheless
One thing I’m going to ask, I used to have around 4 hours of idling time before actually playing the game. Can I ignore the idling time and input how long I actually played, or should I put whatever is on my profile right now?
I’m putting 5.7 hours for now though.
that’s fine - so far I’ve always counted idled time (it’s more about what your profile says than what you’ve actually done, since we can’t really see if you’ve idled or roamed around for 3 hours)

May I ask what you didn’t like about the themes so far? Just the ideas or something more specific? (Or was it just that you had other games you’d rather play, this month one of them fits?)
I guess it was more the idea of:
1) Not having the themes be for the stuff that I play (example: HOG games)
2) The challenges never felt like actual challenges.
I’ll elaborate on the second point. This challenge felt like an actual challenge because you were given a task that can’t be done too easily. It really requires time and effort and you’re less constricted compared to the “Do-Over” or “Superhero” themes. With something that specific, you really need to be in the mood to enjoy the game to its fullest. Otherwise, your experience will be sub-par. If there is a challenge like that, then (at least for me) it’s hard to even get into that mindset of playing something in specific because me starting up the game feels forced. I know it isn’t. It’s a voluntary challenge after all. It’s something that just gnaws at the back of my mind.
Having the freedom to choose almost anything and also seeing how you did, compared to others feels like a community effort, compared to the specific themes, which mostly just boiled down to “Do I have any of these games? Oh, I can only play this one?”. It’s one huge project, not a bunch of small things to cross off your checklist.
I started checking the challenges from the beginning and always just had to give up because I just either lacked the games needed, had already completed them or just didn’t feel like playing them.
The last one I really liked was the Scavenger Hunt, because it gave you freedom while also making sure that you pay more attention to the game’s details. I sadly was just too late to start that one.
I really like the idea of those challenges and thinking of them is not an easy task. It gets people to play stuff they might’ve skipped otherwise and that’s a very good cause. I just sadly can’t get into most of them.
But, again, thanks for this challenge. This has already proven to be very fun. :)

I bought it on Steam Sale on 5th July, no idling. And I think that Main + Extras on HLTB doesn’t count going after mini games achievements and races, that’s why it has so short completion time.

Played it last month a little. Today is 14th day of month and in last 2 weeks I played in it in 6,5h (in total 22h) which gives 15,5h already played. So I’m left with ~28h of gameplay to complete it.

The 200 days goal was almost impossible to achieve anyway, maybe 100 would have been realistic in one month. Unless I’d hibernate, but that would be boring. I will continue playing The Long Dark to familiarize myself with the other areas and because it’s gorgeous and addictive. I can say for sure I will never get lost again in Mystery Lake and the Ravine as I explored every nook and cranny.
In my opinion, I partially failed. I set a goal because I picked an endless game. I guess you could mark it done, with asterisk :3
I probably wouldn’t have picked it up now if the name of the monthly theme didn’t remind me of it.

Well, while I’m far from beating the Main Story as I keep getting distracted by other fun stuff to do in the game, I did manage to reach my goal of 20 hours, which I’m actually pretty surprised by.
Monthly challenge failed. Completed dozens of quests, several quest lines, got 21 more achievements in 39 hours :)
I guess i could have rushed main quest and not get lost in side ones, just didn’t feel like it. But at least i got myself to play Skyrim and planning on doing so until completed :D

I think this is a wonderful idea!! My mentality is exactly what you said in the OP - it’s much better to get a lot of shorter games done than a big one, right? So I decided to gather up all my big RPGS and ask RNGesus which to play. First I pulled out Shadowrun: Returns but it actually only came out to about 18 hours on HLTB - I’d probably put in more because of how slow I tend to play, but I want to play by the rules. FF3 came up second.
(Those 2hs was most likely idling!)

In this link you have the 2 runs that i did. Imagem . My first run was exploring and killing all optional bosses except the first. I killed it in my second run for the achievement.

I’ve 100% completed my pick, Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition. It took me 53h this month (63h total - I started it Jun 29th), which just reinforces my opinion that people submitting their times to HLTB either are some kind of speedrunners trying to boast how fast they did that all, or plainly don’t know what “completed” means :P
Well, sometimes people are actually faster (see Wolfedood’s times for his game ;) )
Except Main+Extras you can interpret however you want - you rush through the story / main questline & then what? One person will do more other will do less side things, so I can understand differences on this. Completed is completed though. TheZooz who picked SD:DE for me had 65h on completion (so basically very close to me). I’ve checked few of my friends with 100% on this and none of them had less than 52h on it.
I’m not arguing with you or anything:), I’m just really frustrated with HLTB. I can kind of use it as a broad pointer (whether playing the game will take single, double or triple digits) and now that I had a chance to compare more of my stats to usual HLTB stats I somewhat know I need to multiply whatever HLTB shows by 2-3 to get more accurate estimate for myself. But I don’t like using HLTB as a holy gospel or as a strict filter for anything. :P
please don’t take this as me arguing for HLTB, this is the first time I’m using it for anything and as I said in the main post, I know it’s not super accurate - though the games I checked for myself so far actually are pretty close. My comment was just about your comment “I needed much longer”, right in between two other “I didn’t need as much time” comments in my inbox. So it goes in both directions, one day you might stumble upon a game that you finish in half the time HLTB predicts ;) (And if you submit your time on the site, the time might get more accurate ;) )
Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition took me 37 hours to 100%. I also just did random stuff quite a lot, so I’m not sure if they’re speedrunning or you’re just soaking the game in for a long time :D

I finished L.A. Noire yesterday! 100% too! The HLTB estimate was quite accurate, it took me 48 hours as opposed to 45, although that includes a fair bit of time where I just left it running. I finished it way faster than I expected but I probably won’t commit to another 20+ game this month as they are a bit exhausting!

I completed Final Fantasy IX. Spent a grand total of 39h in game on steam, but that included a lot of time away from the game (keeping it paused), when I did things like cooking, or went down to the store. Vikings - Wolves of Midgard beaten. I’ve basically completed everything that could be done in a single playthrough. All that is left are consequent playthroughs in different modes/ difficulties or with a different character, so another 40-50 hours each time. For now I had enough ;) Although it’s a bit addictive so I did start another char on highest difficulty and I also continue with my first char simultaneously in new game+. I won’t be focusing on W-VoM anymore though - time to move on to other games (and probably shorter ones, so this was my last entry for this month’s theme). I may play a map or two once a week or something, just for fun :)
*should be 34/39 - one achiv is broken atm & didn’t proc. I especifically farmed for it, sigh T_T

Done! HLTB was right on the money for once.
Managed to beat L.A. Noire: Complete Edition. Took me 27 hours in total (22h after submitting myself in this monthly theme). The game’s so good. One of the only ones that barely had anything boring in it.
44/60 achievements as well
That’s it! I’m done! Have a screen with Credits rolling. Played time: 65h. Giving up on ship battles :D

Hi, I didn’t add this game to the list since it’s not on Steam and you’ve already beaten a fitting game on Steam, but still congrats on beating another game :)
Finished both games (not sure if you’ve seen my other reply earlier this month), at 52.2 hours in (10.1 hours since I signed up) for Gems of War and 12.2 hours in for Game of Thrones - A Telltale Games Series.
Thank you for this month’s theme, I’d been postponing playing GoT and Jurassic Park from the first Telltale bundle for over a year and this gave me enough motivation to finish this awesome game :)

I got VERY sidetracked by sidequesting / achievement hunting even if the cheevos are uplay only, and ended up putting 45h into it. Got 44/50 cheevos on uplay, and in case you need something else I posted a screen of the credits on steam ;).
It was really a cool idea for this month’s theme, thanks for making me play a longer game rather than shorter ones.

Finally completed Divinity with 72 hours total and 41/54 achi.
That took waaay longer than i anticipated and i almost gave up last week after losing every file on my hdd (thank god for steam cloud).
Hey nelly. I’ve just finished my plathrough of Final Fantasy XIII yesterday, as summed up by my post here.
My in-game playtime has a massive difference from my logged playtime. As I’ve explained in my post earlier, performance issues made the game run slower than how it should be. On top of that, I had once slept while the game was still on lol. Arguably though, what I cleared is only the Main Story part, but I don’t really want to endure another 70 hours of playing a game in 15 FPS for now xD.
I’ve posted 6 days ago, that I’m starting another one, Dishonored DE. Today, I’ve beaten it - the base game as well as both story dlcs. I’ve also managed to get every achievement possible for a single playthrough (many are mutually exclusive). I may get back to it, do some trials and a 2nd playthrough (full stealth, non lethal one), but that’s for another time, certainly not this month :) For now I’m satisfied :)
